About The Position

The Benefits Administration & Retirement Operations Intern will join Xcel Energy’s Benefits team and gain hands-on experience supporting retirement and health & welfare benefit programs. Working alongside experienced benefits professionals, the intern will assist with retirement processing, benefits administration, reporting, vendor coordination, and operational data reviews. This role provides exposure to systems such as Workday, SAP, and other benefit administration platforms while helping ensure accurate and timely delivery of benefits to employees, retirees, and beneficiaries. The position is based in Minneapolis, MN, and offers valuable experience in HR operations, benefits administration, retirement programs, process improvement, and data analysis.

Requirements

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Management
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with benefit administration activities by reviewing transactions, researching discrepancies, and helping maintain accurate participant records across multiple systems.
  • Perform weekly and monthly reporting, data validation, and operational tracking for retirement and benefits programs.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to support retirement, health and welfare, and deferred compensation administration processes.
  • Assist with payroll, trust, and funding reconciliation activities and help identify opportunities for process improvements.
  • Document business processes and support special projects related to benefits operations, compliance, and participant experience.
