About The Position

This internship offers a unique opportunity to work alongside National Tax Office professionals on emerging tax developments and controversy matters. Interns will support organizations in navigating an evolving tax environment and their interactions with the Internal Revenue Service. The role is ideal for candidates who enjoy in-depth analysis of complex technical issues, translating sophisticated concepts into practical guidance, and staying current with federal tax developments.

Requirements

  • Detail-oriented individual with exceptional analytical, problem-solving skills, and communication skills.
  • Strong interest in tax law, tax controversy, and emerging tax issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex topics and communicate conclusions clearly through written work.
  • Pursuing a JD, LLM, or Master's degree in Taxation.
  • Academic success (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0).
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, with the exception of qualified candidates who are bilingual in either Japanese and English or Chinese and English.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior coursework, experience, or demonstrated interest in tax research, legal writing, or controversy matters is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluating tax planning strategies resulting from federal legislation, regulations, court cases, and market developments.
  • Researching technical positions, drafting memos and other position papers, and consulting with clients on a variety of federal tax matters.
  • Engaging with the IRS and preparing responses to exams, appeals, and collections.
  • Conducting technical research and writing memoranda to support tax positions, exam responses, and appeals.
  • Drafting private letter ruling requests and proactive planning for future tax positions.
  • Assisting with National Tax Office functions, such as writing internal and external tax alerts on current tax developments, tax controversy topics, and emerging planning techniques.
  • Meaningful interactions with staff at all levels as well as with clients.
  • Deepening knowledge of tax law, controversy, and emerging tax developments through hands-on experience with sophisticated technical issues.
