About The Position

The Emergency Services Technician (EST) performs direct patient care as directed by nursing and medical staff, ensuring patient needs are met efficiently and compassionately. This role involves a variety of tasks including assisting with procedures, monitoring patients, maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring a high level of customer service within the Emergency Department (ED). The EST is crucial in supporting the ED team to deliver high-quality care and maintain operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years of hospital patient care or pre-hospital patient care experience OR completion of 1 year of nursing school clinical rotations OR Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to use keyboard and see computer screen.
  • Ability to move/lift patients and push carts.
  • Completion of age-specific competency.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to transport by wheelchair and cart all patient populations, including bariatrics.

Nice To Haves

  • EMT-Ps licensed by IDPH may complete the housewide competency to start IVs, saline locks, and administer IV fluids.

Responsibilities

  • Perform direct patient care as directed by nursing and medical staff based on skills.
  • Start IVs, saline locks, and administer IV fluids (for EMT-Ps licensed by IDPH).
  • Assist nursing and physicians with invasive procedures such as advanced airway and central line insertion.
  • Apply bedside monitors, place leads (cardiac monitor, NIBP, pulse ox), perform 12 lead EKGs, phlebotomy, orthopedic post molds and splints, crutch training, monitor and discontinue urinary catheters, and assist patients with ADLs and toileting.
  • Document all interventions in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist with the application of hard and soft restraints and monitor behavioral health patients.
  • Immediately report concerns regarding patient status to nursing and medical staff.
  • Ensure adequate supplies and equipment are available and maintained for patient care throughout the shift.
  • Continually assess levels of medical supplies and equipment, initiating orders for needed supplies.
  • Ensure adequate levels of linen are available in all patient care areas.
  • Perform gross cleaning of used sterile instruments and transport them to Sterile Processing.
  • Clean flexible scopes and fiberoptic laryngoscope blades.
  • Monitor equipment function, report malfunctions, and arrange for repairs.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of equipment and supplies in all patient care areas.
  • Complete patient rounds hourly, managing patient expectations using AIDET and reporting concerns.
  • Make rounds on patients in the ED waiting room.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care in accordance with ED quality initiatives.
  • Maintain annual competencies in compliance with applicable policy and procedure.
  • Maintain competency in all ED Tech assignment patient care areas.
  • Perform point of care testing.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure adequate coverage in the ED, including during meals and breaks.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of clerical functions to assist with coverage when necessary.
  • Communicate with ED Charge Nurse and fellow ED Techs to meet patient care needs.
  • Transport patients, supplies, and equipment interdepartmentally.
  • Transport blood products, medications, x-rays, and medical supplies as needed.
