About The Position

The Emergency Services Assistant (Nursing Assistant) provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role involves assisting patients with daily living activities, performing direct care tasks such as bed baths and making beds, obtaining vital signs, and documenting patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The assistant will also perform unit-specific patient care, collect samples for testing, clean equipment, and maintain inventory of supplies. They are expected to adhere to facility policies, JCAHO standards, and legal requirements, practicing with a customer service approach and demonstrating knowledge of universal precautions and infection control policies. The role also includes applying immobilization devices, stocking patient rooms and carts, and performing room turnovers. The Emergency Services Assistant is expected to consistently provide service excellence, reflecting the hospital's commitment to compassion, accountability, respect, excellence, and service.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communication in English
  • Possess a High school Diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Must meet at least one of the following qualifications: a) Completed a Nursing Assistant Program or equivalent b) Completed an EMT Program c) Completed an LPN Program d) Completed at least one year of Nursing School Program which includes two semesters of clinical practice e) Military corps person
  • Possess a Current Basic Life Support Certification
  • Successfully pass the Falmouth Hospital written competency exam for Nursing Assistant
  • Obtain CPI Certification within 4 months from hire and must maintain recertification bi-annually.
  • Minimum six (6) months experience in a health care setting
  • Phlebotomy
  • Must have taken the EKG course.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) within 4 months of new position and must renew every two years
  • Must have ability to read, write, understand English
  • Current CNA license, or EMT-P, or recent military medic or Nursing Student (1 year of clinical rotation required and maintaining of 3.0 GPA)
  • Healthcare Professional Basic Life Support BLS.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care for patients according to facility/agency, JCAHO and the law.
  • Provides care as part of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Documents according to facility/agency and department policies.
  • Prioritizes duties according to patient and department needs.
  • Meets the needs of the patient/family using internal and external resources.
  • Uses appropriate physical resources/equipment in a safe manner.
  • Maintains appropriate licenses, certifications, registrations required to perform duties of their designated role/position.
  • Addresses age-specific needs of infants, toddlers, school age, adolescents, adults, older adults.
  • Performs role in a responsible manner taking into account customer service initiatives.
  • Performs specialized procedures as required by specific unit.
  • Uses sterile techniques as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers in a manner that reflects Falmouth Hospital’s commitment to CARES: compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and service.
  • Participates in patient care and other unit activities under the direct supervision and guidance of the professional Registered Nurse.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living as delegated by RN.
  • Performs direct care activities, including/assisting with bed baths, bed & stretcher making (occupied/unoccupied for patient flow and efficient turnaround time.
  • Orients patients to their exam room, including clothing list, television, and call lights.
  • Obtains accurate vital signs, height & weight, pulse oximetry, and documents in Emergency Department Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Performs Unit specific patient care as directed by RN.
  • Performs Intake & output (I&O excluding IV therapy).
  • Performs Post-Mortem Care; i.e.; washes and dresses bodies of deceased persons.
  • Performs 12 Lead EKG’s.
  • Sets up Holter monitoring for patients based on physician order, if needed.
  • Participates in/performs patient rounding (based on acuity) on patients.
  • Provides direct observation (sitter/1:1) as necessary based on department need.
  • Collects samples, such as urine, blood, and sputum, from patients for testing and performs routine laboratory tests on samples.
  • Performs Glucoscans when required.
  • May be required to retrieve blood products from the Blood Bank.
  • Cleans equipment and supplies as needed during/after patient care process.
  • Inventories assigned rooms and/or requisitions supplies as part of daily assignment.
  • Performs dressing care, and wound care by assisting in the process of a normal saline irrigation of minor wounds (lacerations and/or abrasions).
  • Demonstrates through clinical practice the use of universal precautions, understands the OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens Standards.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and/or practice in the prevention of TB transmission and adheres to all other infection control policies.
  • Must wear facility provided identification badge at all times.
  • Applies inline immobilization device (collars, back board), ordered soft splints.
  • Performs appropriate crutch-training.
  • Performs Equipment Inventory, Stocking of Equipment and Linen.
  • Appropriately stocks patient rooms, IV carts, linen carts, and specialty carts.
  • Checks all Patient Care Equipment.
  • In collaboration with clinical team performs room turnovers, in preparation for patient use.
  • Performs other duties assigned within PCT scope and practice of care.
