About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor (ER) and close supervision by the RN Charge Nurse each shift, the Emergency Room Technician (ERT) accomplishes the Department of Nursing’s strategic objectives by assisting in planning and organizing the assigned functions required to operate and maintain patient care activities and services within the ERT scope of practice. The ERT ensures quality and compassionate direct patient care is provided in assigned areas and maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program or Emergency Medical Technician certified.
  • One (1) year of experience in a medical environment.
  • Valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS Certification.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.
  • Must possess the ability to think critically and clearly under stress.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret applicable tribal, federal, state, local laws, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of The Joint Commission standards for accreditation.
  • Knowledge of effective principles and practices of education and development.
  • Knowledge of standards of care for patient care.
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures.
  • Knowledge of clinical instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of appropriate procedures and standards for patient care aids.
  • Ability to understand the policy and procedure for the Emergency Department.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment needed for procedures, and how to complete the requisition forms.
  • Knowledge of the location of all supplies, forms, crash cart in the department.
  • Knowledge of the abuse and domestic violence policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics.
  • Ability to perform and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and function at a high level of independence.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationship with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Level I & III in EKG interpretation, preferred.
  • Ability to speak the Navajo language and/or familiarity with the Navajo Way.

Responsibilities

  • Complete required competencies for the unit assigned to work in.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of all patient and employee information.
  • Assist with establishing, implementing, and communicating goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with the scope of his/her educational preparation, knowledge, and as permitted by policies and procedures at Sage Memorial Hospital and additional local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances including CMS (Centers for Medicare/Medicaid) and The Joint Commission.
  • Implement standard of care practices.
  • Provide and support activities regarding implementation of hospital policy on patient’s rights and responsibilities.
  • Assist with technical functions including: application of cardiac monitor electrodes, obtaining 12-lead EKGs, maintenance and care of specimens for laboratory analysis, point of care testing (e.g.: COVID19 swab testing, Strep, Flu A/B, Hemocue, etc.) , and other skilled procedures for which the Emergency Room Technician has been trained.
  • Assist with positioning patients, application of orthopedic splints and dressings.
  • Assist with wound care, insertion of urinary catheters, and nasogastric tubes.
  • Assist RN to perform basic triage assessment including taking vital signs, weight and height, chief complaint and determine the purpose of the visit, then record all information in the patient’s electronic medical health record.
  • Measure and fit crutches and canes, instruct patients on proper crutch and cane use.
  • Maintain use of appropriate medical equipment, medical, and office supplies.
  • Practice infection control by decontaminating all equipment, instruments, and supplies, and correctly dons and doffs personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Accept and adapt to change in work area and/or work duties as assigned.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in patient’s medical record and Emergency Department logs, as required.
  • Schedule appointments and process interfacility transfer documentation.
  • Perform general clerical tasks including making copies, filing documents, answering, and screening incoming telephone calls, and greeting and assisting visitors.
  • Ensure that the department is clean by changing linen cleaning beds, etc.
  • Collaborate with medical providers and other discipline resources in planning and providing patient care services.
  • Coordinate ordering of medical and department office supplies if applicable.
  • Collaborate to ensure proper provision of care to provide for psychological, psychosocial environmental, educational and discharge planning needs of the patient are met.
  • Attend mandatory departmental staff meetings and in-services.
  • Translate diagnosis information into Navajo language or arrange for a translator for the patient if applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with BLS certification, infection control, patient safety, fire safety and annual mandatory hospital-wide education and training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
