About The Position

The ERT Technician supports the Fire Chief (ERT Chief) by managing administrative, training, and logistical functions, with special responsibility for ensuring that all fire protection and emergency response equipment is inspected, tested, and maintained (ITM) in full compliance with NFPA, OSHA, and company standards. This role is the hub for readiness tracking, documentation, and resource accountability. The ERT Technician works closely with Safety and Environmental to integrate safety and emergency response readiness into daily operations and continuous improvement initiatives. The ERT Technician reports to the Emergency Response Manager and supports departmental strategy by executing assigned initiatives, priorities, and operational tasks necessary to maintain emergency response readiness, a well-maintained emergency response system, and compliance with regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • ICS-100, 200, 300
  • NFPA 1081 Fire Brigade (minimum Exterior Firefighting).
  • Hazmat Awareness/Operations certifications.
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA ITM standards (10, 11, 20, 25, and 1962)
  • OSHA 30-hr General Industry Certification
  • OSHA 30-hr Construction Certification
  • TWIC card required or ability to obtain.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license required.
  • Must pass all pre-employment testing including drug test, physical, and background check.
  • Availability for an on-call schedule coordinating with the entire Safety Department to respond to safety-related emergencies and permitting.

Responsibilities

  • Track compliance with NFAP, OSHA, and CFR requirements.
  • Assist in developing and evaluating drills.
  • Assist in maintaining the ERT Roster (names, contact info, department, and shift assignments).
  • Assist in tracking new members onboarding and probationary progress.
  • Serve as the primary coordinator for all ITM programs related to firefighting and emergency equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA 20 (pumps), NFPA 25 (water-based systems), NFAP 11 (foam systems), NFPA 10 (extinguishers), and NFPA 1962 (hose testing).
  • Maintain detailed ITM logs for various equipment including Fire Pumps, Hydrants, fixed monitors, valves, Foam Systems, Self-contained breathing apparatus and spare cylinders, Portable monitors, nozzles, and appliances, Rescue Equipment, Fire Extinguishers, Medical equipment, Eye Wash Stations and Safety Showers, Water Rescue Boxes, Emergency Response Boat, Spill Response Boom, Fire Apparatus, Quick Attack Apparatus, Emergency Response Trailer, Hose Inspections and Testing, Bunker Gear, and Fire Base Conex.
  • Inventory of all emergency response related equipment.
  • Coordinate corrective actions for deficiencies with maintenance and/or contractors.
  • Ensure service tags, inspection stickers, and electronic records are current and audit ready.
  • Prepare inspection logs, ITM schedules, and compliance checklists.
  • Maintain ITM files and digital records for audits, drills, and inspections.
  • Support Facility Response Plan (FRP) compliance and documentation.
  • During incidents, act as an accountability/resource officer under the ICS structure.
  • Provide support to the On-Scene Incident Commander role.
  • Conduct routine audits of Permit to Work (PTW) activities (hot work, confined space, line break, lifting) to verify compliance with site procedures.
  • Perform field verification of controls (PPE, barricading, atmospheric monitoring, isolation validation as applicable).
  • Document findings, track corrective actions, and provide real-time coaching to personnel.
  • Deliver site safety orientations for employees and contractors.
  • Ensure understanding of site hazards, critical safety rules, and Permit to Work expectations.
  • Maintain consistency and quality of orientation delivery aligned with HSS standards.
  • Maintain consistent field presence to identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and procedural gaps.
  • Provide immediate coaching and escalate risks as needed.
  • Maintain consistent participation in required operational meetings.
  • Respond to communications in timely and professional manner and ensure critical information is communicated effectively to relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain high standards of organization, follow-through, and documentation.
  • Demonstrate reliability in attendance, punctuality, and preparation for meetings and operational responsibilities.
  • Identify problems early, communicate risks clearly, and drive solutions rather than escalating issues without recommendations.
  • Ensure commitments and action items are completed on time and with quality.
