About The Position

As a key member of GFL’s HAZMAT Emergency Response Team, the HAZMAT Technician will provide a high level of technical expertise to emergency activations involving dangerous goods. The Technician will supplement our current team to ensure immediate response is provided to all emergency response calls, 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. The person will be able to complete responses in an efficient manner while upholding GFL’s high standards of safety and quality of service. The position requires exceptional skills in safety, planning, communication, organizing and time management.

Requirements

  • Ability to be flexible and fulfill the on-call and travel requirements of this position.
  • A Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving abstract is required.
  • Physically fit and able to wear chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection from time to time as required. This will require the Hazmat Technician to be clean shaven.
  • Ability to work out of town from time to time as needed.
  • Valid work authorization in the country where the job is located is required.
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide valid documentation confirming their eligibility to work in the country where the job is located prior to their start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid Class 1 or 3 driver’s license would be highly desirable.
  • Experience in handling and/or transporting hazardous materials or emergency response would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with vacuum trucks and power wash equipment would be an asset.
  • Any prior training or experience relating to the following would be an asset: HAZMAT Technician, Tank car Specialist, Tank truck Specialist, ICS, Confined Space Entry, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Respond at a moment’s notice to HAZMAT Emergency Responses including responding to rail, road, and fixed facilities.
  • Perform chemical transloading from one means of containment to another. This may include tank cars, tank trucks, fixed facility tanks, or other small means of containment.
  • Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.
  • Assist with organizing all resources required in both a response situation and in preparation for a potential response situation, including personnel, equipment, and documentation.
  • Ensure all emergency response equipment is operationally ready including preparation, equipment decontamination, and servicing of ER equipment as outlined and required.
  • Ensure all relevant information and documentation is gathered and maintained when providing emergency services.
  • Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response, including following GFL procedures, completing safety documentation, and upholding GFL’s high level of safety.
  • Participate in live training events.
  • Willing to participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.
