About The Position

The VA Augusta Healthcare System is seeking an Emergency Physician to provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). This role involves providing professional advice to other VA providers regarding patient management, and covering the full spectrum of emergency room care typically found in a similar-sized urban civilian practice. The position is estimated to be 95% direct patient care and 5% administrative responsibility. The physician will manage a wide range of cases including major trauma, medical emergencies, obstetrical emergencies, pediatric emergencies, acute psychiatric problems, lower-acuity complaints, and other miscellaneous medical issues.

Requirements

Unrestricted license to practice medicine in any other U.S. State or Territory.
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine.
No less than 2 years full-time ER experience in a high-volume ED.
Must be MD or DO.
Capable of treating patients of all ages.
Must have a current DEA.
Must have and maintain current certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS by way of an American Heart training program (AHA or Red Cross).

Responsibilities

Provide immediate medical evaluation, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and/or referral of patients who present for care in the ED.
Provide professional advice to other VA providers with regard to professional management of patients in their fast-track portion of the Emergency Department.
Cover the range of emergency room care typically provided in an urban civilian practice of similar size.
Manage major trauma, including fractures of multiple extremities, stab wounds, open wounds of the chest and abdomen, head trauma, suspected spine injuries, lacerations, amputations.
Manage major medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, respiratory failure, shock.
Manage obstetrical emergencies such as deliveries of single or multiple births, acute pregnancy complications, vaginal bleeding.
Manage pediatric emergencies, including neonatal resuscitations.
Manage acute psychiatric problems, including suicide attempts.
Manage lower-acuity complaints including viral illnesses, other infections, minor orthopedic problems, minor trauma, alcohol abuse (i.e. "urgent care” patients).
Manage other miscellaneous medical problems both acute and chronic.
