About The Position

Riverside Health is currently seeking a Full-Time Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director to join our team at Riverside Regional Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Newport News, Virginia. This leadership opportunity averages 16 hours per week for the director to shape the future of community Emergency Medicine training while maintaining a supportive and collaborative academic clinical environment. The remaining contract hours will be spent working in the Emergency Department. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director serves as the physician leader responsible for the oversight, administration, compliance, and continuous improvement of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The Program Director ensures adherence to all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements and provides leadership in resident education, faculty development, clinical learning environment oversight, scholarly activity, and program evaluation. This position averages 16 hours per week dedicated to residency program leadership responsibilities. The Program Director reports to the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for their academic role. Our program began in 2019 and has maintained continued accreditation throughout its life. Riverside has been training residents since the 1950s with programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. We also have a credentialed Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Fellowship based out of the Emergency Department.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from an accredited medical school
  • Board Certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM)
  • Eligible for appointment to the Riverside Medical Staff
  • Demonstrated commitment to graduate medical education, academic leadership, and physician mentorship
  • Minimum qualifications required by ACGME for Emergency Medicine Residency Program Directors
  • Eligible for Virginia licensure at time of hire
  • DEA registration (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
  • BLS certification required

Nice To Haves

  • Prior residency leadership experience as a Program Director, Associate Program Director, Core Faculty Member, or other academic leadership role
  • Experience with resident recruitment, curriculum development, and faculty development
  • Experience with accreditation processes and ACGME requirements
  • Scholarly activity and participation in academic medicine
  • ACLS preferred based on practice setting

Responsibilities

  • Guide core faculty to maintain an effective academic program.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Graduate Medical Education and Vice President of Academics and Medical Education on health system initiatives.
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all aspects of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable ACGME accreditation requirements and institutional policies.
  • Maintain responsibility for the quality and effectiveness of the non-clinical education.
  • Attend residency recruitment events, interview days, and Match events.
  • Direct curriculum development, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor resident performance and progression toward competency-based milestones.
  • Oversee resident recruitment, selection, orientation, evaluation, promotion, remediation, and graduation processes.
  • Foster a learning environment that promotes professionalism, patient safety, wellness, diversity, inclusion, and scholarly activity.
  • Participate in resident and faculty educational conferences and teaching activities.
  • Collaborate with residency faculty and institutional leadership to ensure program success.
  • Promote faculty development and engagement in resident education.
  • Direct Program Evaluation Committee and Clinical Competency Committee activities as required.
  • Prepare and submit required accreditation reports and program documentation.
  • Participate in annual program reviews and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Meet all requirements and perform all duties set forth in the Program Director Job Description provided in writing, as updated from time to time.
  • Perform any other Emergency Medicine Residency or Graduate Medical Education duties as reasonably required.
