About The Position

Akicita Federal is hiring an Emergency Medicine Physician – Fast Track to deliver urgent and fast-track emergency care to patients served by the Indian Health Service at the Shiprock Service Unit in Shiprock, NM. This is a meaningful opportunity to provide high-quality, culturally responsive emergency medicine to an underserved Native American community in the heart of the Navajo Nation. You will work alongside a dedicated care team to ensure patients receive timely, compassionate treatment in a fast-paced emergency environment.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Emergency Medicine
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine (any U.S. state or territory)
  • Demonstrated clinical experience providing emergency or urgent care services
  • Ability to work independently in a high-volume emergency environment with variable patient acuity
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and proper handling of Protected Health Information (PHI)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working with Native American or other underserved/tribal patient populations
  • Previous service at an Indian Health Service, tribal, or urban Indian health program facility
  • Experience practicing in a rural or frontier emergency department setting
  • Proficiency with Indian Health Service EHR systems (e.g., RPMS/EHR)
  • Cultural competency training or demonstrated experience in cross-cultural healthcare delivery

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients presenting to the fast-track area of the emergency department across a broad spectrum of acute and non-urgent conditions
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic studies including lab work, imaging, and point-of-care testing to guide clinical decision-making
  • Initiate and manage appropriate treatment plans, including medication orders, wound care, splinting, and minor procedures
  • Coordinate patient flow in the fast-track setting to reduce wait times and improve throughput for lower-acuity patients
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, mid-level providers, and specialists to ensure continuity and quality of patient care
  • Document clinical encounters accurately and completely in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in compliance with IHS standards and HIPAA requirements
  • Provide clear discharge instructions and appropriate follow-up planning to support patient health outcomes in a resource-limited community setting
