About The Position

Provides primary medical care and treatment to prisoners of the Salt Lake County Jails. This role involves performing basic emergency medical techniques, providing first response to emergency situations, and administering medications within the scope of practice. The position requires obtaining and recording patient vital signs, reporting changes in patient condition, performing phlebotomy, and maintaining medical records. Additionally, the EMT will advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention, and apply universal infection control procedures.

Requirements

  • Current Certification with the State of Utah as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • Must pass a required background check through fingerprinting.
  • Must enroll in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program.
  • Ability to perform medical procedures within the scope of practice.
  • Ability to maintain full awareness of surroundings and others’ reactions, making adjustments according to the situation while providing health care services to prisoners.
  • Ability to monitor/assess medical emergencies or issues and form medical response while maintaining the safety of those involved.
  • Ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Ability to recognize problems, analyze information, evaluate results, and apply general rules and standard operating procedures to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Ability to understand and apply security measures in the jail environment.
  • Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and effectively; listen to and understand information and ideas as presented verbally.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic emergency medical techniques in the care and treatment of patients under the supervision of the nursing or physician staff.
  • Provides medical first response to emergency situations in the jails.
  • Accesses and administers medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.
  • Obtains and records patient temperatures, pulse rates, blood pressure, weight and height measurements, review of medications, allergies, past medical history, and places patient on pulse oximetry and cardiac monitors.
  • Reports and records all observed or verbalized patient concerns and changes in condition to a member of the nursing or physician staff.
  • Performs specialty skills and delegated procedures under the direct supervision of the nursing or physician staff.
  • Performs phlebotomy.
  • Cleans and stock examination rooms and medication carts as needed.
  • Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care.
  • Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents.
  • Facilitates communication and reporting to on-coming shift of health care staff members to promote continuity of patient care.
  • Advises patients on health maintenance and disease prevention.
  • Applies universal infection control procedures.
