About The Position

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an essential member of Oakland Zoo’s team, responding to radio calls and providing basic first aid and life support as needed. The EMT supports a positive experience for Zoo guests, staff, vendors, and members of the public by providing superior customer service. The position also supports general safety, security, and operations, as well as administrative functions including public safety calls and Lost and Found documentation. No supervisory responsibilities are assigned.

Requirements

At least 1 year of relevant experience, including experience working with the public.
At least 18 years old.
State of California EMT Certification.
High school graduate or GED.
Valid driver’s license and a good DMV driving record that satisfies the Zoo’s insurance carrier.
Able to problem solve and effectively read, write, and take directions in English.
Reliable, dependable, honest, courteous, and professional, with the ability to ensure confidentiality when necessary.
Available to work weekends and holidays unless otherwise authorized.
Able to bend and twist, lift 25 lbs., stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop, and speak regularly and for long periods of time, up to 8-hour shifts or more.
Communicate respectfully and effectively with stakeholders across identities.

Current State of California Security Guard Card, or willingness to obtain one with Oakland Zoo’s assistance.

Responsibilities

Respond to radio calls and assess on-view situations involving injury or illness.
Provide basic first aid and life support as needed and determine whether advanced life support is necessary.
Maintain supplies in Facility First Aid and Disaster Kits and monitor Fire Extinguisher readiness, certification, and placement.
Assist in developing Emergency Preparedness Plans.
Conduct weekly Zoo/Park tours to document safety hazards.
Initiate and write Accident/Incident/Hazard Reports and other documentation required to protect Zoo assets and liability.
Conduct vehicle and foot patrols related to opening and locking gates, Robbery Prevention, Public Safety, and Building Security.
Respond to security calls, including removing individuals from Zoo property when needed.
Support parking operations as needed.
Set and respond to alarms and address violations in picnic and/or party areas.
Assist with internal investigations.
Perform revenue escorts.
Monitor and report excessive speed by Zoo and employee vehicles and improper or careless use of Zoo equipment.
Answer office phone calls regarding public safety and Lost and Found items.
Assist with Lost and Found organization and documentation.
Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
