About The Position

This recruitment is being conducted to establish an eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies as they arise. Candidates who meet the qualifications and successfully complete the selection process will be placed on the eligibility list. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for providing emergency medical care and hospital transport to citizens calling 911. The EMT classification represents a high level of urgent response treatment care provided for out of hospital medical or traumatic emergencies. EMTs must possess the following qualifications: EMT Certification, CPR Certification, and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Certification. Work responsibilities extend to monitoring and ordering supplies and emergency vehicle inspection and maintenance. All work must be performed in accordance with best practices, Federal, State and County laws, regulations, local ordinances, policies, procedures and the Maryland EMS provider protocols. The position works under the direction of and reports to the career EMS Shift Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School degree.
  • One year of experience as an EMT or one year in a related emergency response field.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operating Course Certification.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Maryland EMT certification (Applicants who are not a Maryland certified EMS provider that are National Registry certified must obtain a valid Maryland certification within thirty days of hire).
  • Complete within 6 months of hire and maintain IV Technician Certification.
  • Complete within 6 months of hire and maintain BLS 12-Lead Acquisition Certification.
  • Successful completion of MFRI Hazardous Material Operations Course within 6-months of hire.
  • Maintain CPR Certification.
  • Subject to agility testing (Candidate Physical Ability Test - CPAT).
  • Subject to background investigation.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical and periodic assessment.
  • Subject to initial drug screening and random testing.
  • Operation of County and volunteer fire and rescue department owned vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to 911 calls and for service and performs patient assessment: O2, CPR, monitoring vital signs, 12-lead EKG application and transmission, Intravenous line initiation, interpretation of test results and transportation of patients to care facilities.
  • Provides emergency medical treatment and CPR to patients suffering from medical or traumatic incidents to include the administration of drugs and procedures as per Maryland protocols.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for assigned transport unit.
  • Performs transport unit inspections and maintenance.
  • Sanitizes and deodorizes transport unit daily to comply with various infectious control procedures.
  • Provides emergency care --- bandaging, splinting, medication administration, bleeding control, oxygen administration (and other practices for which personnel are trained).
  • Lifts and carries patients, with assistance, to unit stretcher or transport unit
  • Documents outcome of all calls to include type of call (emergency or non-emergency), care rendered, patient outcomes, and other protocols associated with the incident.
  • Assures that documentation required by the EMS Division, Fire/Rescue/EMS and MIEMSS is furnished in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Performs quality assurance reviews of previous incident calls with co-workers to ensure best practices are maintained.
  • Operates emergency vehicles in accordance with County driving procedures and Career Emergency Medical Services Division operating guidelines.
  • Maintains security levels required to safeguard and protect the privacy of all protected records.
  • Interacts and communicates with volunteer stations, hospital personnel, patients, families, and supervisory personnel.
  • Assists with station duties, as scheduled or required.
  • Performs related work as required.
