About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, Emergency Medical Technicians are members of the care team who, under the supervision of an attending physician, provide life support services and transport patients requiring emergency hospital care. They provide basic life support in an out-of-hospital care setting. This position is part of New York’s Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide (NY HELPS) Program. During the program, the role may be filled by non-competitive appointment without an examination, provided candidates meet the minimum qualifications. Temporary appointments may be made; the posting describes a process for converting a satisfactorily performing temporary NY HELPS employee to permanent non-competitive status and, later, competitive status. The role is full-time on the evening shift. Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. The position may be designated essential, potentially requiring employees to remain at or report to work during an institutional emergency. It may require respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair. Stony Brook Medicine is a smoke-free environment, with smoking prohibited anywhere on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas. Before starting, the selected candidate must complete a pre-employment physical examination and receive medical clearance, complete an electronic reference check with at least three professional references, pass a four-panel drug screen, meet regulatory pre-employment screening requirements, and provide copies of required New York State licenses or certificates. Failure to meet these conditions may delay the start date or result in revocation of the offer. The compensation range is determined based on verified years of relevant, comparable experience. Some positions may include annual supplemental pay such as location pay or shift differentials. Stony Brook University Hospital offers comprehensive benefits including generous leave, health insurance, and participation in the state pension system.
