About The Position

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Manager/EMS System Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The EMS System Coordinator is a licensed Registered Nurse or Paramedic who functions as the liaison for hospital staff and local/area pre-hospital providers. Also, functions as the liaison for the Resource Hospital and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) including hospital and pre-hospital Disaster Preparedness. EMS System Coordinator is an individual responsible to the EMS Medical Director and EMS Administrative Director for coordination of the educational and functional aspects of the System program. Requirements

  • Licensed Registered Nurse or Paramedic
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in providing emergency care or first responder -minimum 5 years’ experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree – Nursing of other Healthcare Related Field
  • IDPH EMS Lead Instructors Instructional experience to include program development and presentation
  • AHA ACLS / PALS and BLS Instructor
  • Trauma Certification- TNCC, TNS, or PHTLS/ITLS (instructor preferred)
  • Knowledge of Emergency Management
  • Familiarity with NEMSIS data requirements and EMS electronic patient care reporting
  • Experience working with CoAEMSP, CAAHEP and National Registry
  • National Certification in area of specialty

Responsibilities

  • Directs the overall daily operations of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department.
  • Operates EMS program in compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health Rules and Regulations. (IDPH Rules/Regulations Section 515.300).
  • Maintains EMS System Plan in accordance with IDPH EMS rules.
  • Develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates short and long-term departmental goals, objectives, strategic plans, operational budgets, policy and standard operating procedures.
  • Hires, develops, mentors, and coaches EMS Staff. Fosters connection between NM values, daily work, and patient/customer satisfaction. Holds staff accountable for modeling service standards and behaviors.
  • Partners with EMS Medical Director to interpret and enforce policies in accordance with system/IDPH standards.
  • Facilitates communication and collaboration among pre-hospital caregivers, resource hospital, and hospital personnel.
  • Coordinates EMS classes and continuing education for Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD), First Responders-Defibrillator (FR-D), EMT, Paramedic, Prehospital RN (PHRN), Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN), and Lead Instructor Recognition. This includes initial training programs offered in collaboration with McHenry County College: Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and Paramedic.
  • Validates requirements toward re-licensures and certifications through the Illinois Department of Public Health to include: Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD), First Responders-Defibrillator (FR-D), EMT, Paramedic, Prehospital RN (PHRN), Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN), and Lead Instructor Recognition.
  • Represents EMS at local, regional, and state committees pertinent to areas of responsibilities.
  • Facilitates the Illinois Department of Public Health annual EMS Grant Application process.
  • Identifies and brings forward current healthcare and legislative issues relevant to pre-hospital care and assist in defining the position of Northwestern Medicine and the NM LFH EMS System
  • Develops and coordinates outreach activities to area pre-hospital providers.
  • Oversees Paramedic Program Director requirements for the Committee on Accreditation of EMS Programs (COAEMSP) and Program Director/Examination Coordinator for National Registry of EMT (NREMT)
  • Conducts continuous quality improvement and service improvement. Uses internal and external benchmark data and best practice to establish targets, timelines, and metrics for improvement projects.
