About The Position

The Emergency Department/Urgent Care Technician (ED/UC Tech) assists the Registered Nurse (RN) in carrying out the nursing process in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care. Under the direction and delegation of the RN and clinician, the ED/UC Tech delivers high-quality, patient-centered care, supports emergency and routine clinical activities, and promotes efficient patient flow. Acting as a patient advocate, the ED/UC Tech collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care while performing delegated clinical and non-clinical duties within the defined scope of practice.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Certified Medical Assistant program, Certified Nursing Assistant Program or EMT program
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Basic keyboarding and computer skills
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and their impact on patient outcomes
  • Knowledge of normal vital sign ranges for pediatric and adult patients
  • Understanding of and adherence to: Patient Bill of Rights, Vulnerable Adults Act, EMTALA requirements, Trauma Code processes
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and medical intervention techniques within scope of practice
  • Knowledge of processes for transferring patients outside of OMC
  • Ability to effectively participate in an interdisciplinary care team
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stress in high-acuity environments
  • Clear oral and written communication skills
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with OMC policy and HIPAA
  • Maintains required competencies and certifications
  • Ability to stand and walk 8–12 hours per shift
  • Occasional squatting, kneeling, and reaching to shoulder height
  • Manual dexterity and visual/auditory acuity required for patient care activities
  • Ability to lift independently up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to push and pull up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to lift over 100 pounds with assistance daily
  • Uses a computer for EMR documentation 4 hours or more per shift

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient observation and delegated patient care activities in accordance with standards of care
  • Obtain, perform, and document vital signs, blood glucose checks, and other point-of-care measurements in a timely manner
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including toileting, ambulation, positioning, and transfers
  • Promptly report abnormal vital signs, blood sugars, observations, or patient concerns to the delegating RN and/or clinician
  • Provide comfort measures and respond to patient needs respectfully and efficiently
  • Assist RNs and providers with bedside procedures
  • Perform basic procedures within scope of practice and training, including: Peripheral IV insertion, Blood draws, Electrocardiograms (EKGs), Foley catheter insertion and catheter care
  • Prepare patients, rooms, and equipment for procedures and examinations
  • Participate in trauma activations, emergency responses, mock codes, and resuscitation efforts as trained
  • Serve as a member of the Decontamination Team
  • Assist with patient transport, including preparation for air transfer when required
  • Participate in the interdisciplinary plan of care for assigned patients
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, clinicians, and ancillary departments to coordinate patient care
  • Monitor and interact with patient service departments to support continuity of care
  • Advocate for patient safety, dignity, and rights in accordance with hospital policy
  • Perform clerical duties, including admission, discharge, transfer paperwork, and phone communication
  • Schedule patients for appropriate follow up appointments within EMR
  • Ensure all documentation, paperwork, and charges are accurate and complete
  • Transport patients safely within the facility or to ancillary departments
  • Clean patient rooms, change linens, and ensure rooms are ready for incoming patients
  • Stock carts, supply rooms, and patient care areas; report low supplies as needed
  • Complete daily and assigned shift duties thoroughly and efficiently
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the patient care team
  • Maintain personal accountability for staying current on required communications (email, training modules, department postings, etc.)
  • Participate in mock codes, educational activities, and required competency validations
  • Assist with orientation and support of new staff as assigned
  • Seek learning and educational opportunities to enhance job knowledge and performance
  • Continually strive to meet and exceed customer service standards for patients, visitors, staff, and medical providers
