About The Position

This position is for an Emergency Department Technician at Banner Ocotillo Medical Center in Chandler, AZ. The role involves providing patient care and assisting healthcare providers with assigned procedures within the scope of training. The ED Tech will work in a state-of-the-art Emergency department with 12 ED bays and 2 major treatment rooms, all eICU capable and utilizing Smart phone, CareAware connect technology. The successful candidate will be part of a team focused on a people-centered culture and a one-team approach, dedicated to safe, kind, effective, efficient, evidenced-based, and high-quality clinical care. The role emphasizes building relationships with patients and making an impact during critical times. The department is committed to providing an excellent work environment for growth and expertise expansion. There are two part-time openings, one evening shift and one night shift, each 24 hours a week with 12-hour shifts, including rotating weekend and holiday shifts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure or state certification, or Certified Nursing Assistant in state of practice is required for new hires and transfers.
  • In Colorado: Either Emergency Medical Technician–Basic (EMT-B) or higher with state licensure or state certification.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Problem-solving ability.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned procedures under general supervision of the RN, APN, PA, or Physician, including electrocardiogram testing (EKG); wound cleansing; initial, repeat and orthostatic vital sign measurements; application of monitor leads, specimen collection, and transports stable telemetry or non-monitored patients to nursing units.
  • Perform advanced skills and functions where state statute permits, such as blood glucose testing; phlebotomy; saline lock insertion; IV discontinuation; bladder (Foley) catheterization, on adult patients and pediatric patients twelve years of age and older upon direct delegation of the task after training.
  • Set up, prepare patient and assist with patient exam and minor surgical or health procedures within scope of training such as lumbar punctures; sterile instrument and field preparation, suturing lacerations, chest tube insertion, closed fracture reduction, gastric lavage, pelvic examinations, restraint application, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Apply orthopedic devices, including pre-manufactured and plaster splints under physician direction.
  • Perform specimen collection, ensuring accuracy in identification and integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age criteria as required by Lab.
  • Perform point of care testing for blood glucose, hemoccult and gastroccult or other tests, and perform quality control checks on point of care equipment as required, where state statute permits.
  • Provide communication and updates to RN, Physician or other providers related to perceived reactions or changes to patients’ condition.
  • Accurately record information in the patient record, document vital signs and procedures completed, as well as the equipment and techniques utilized.
  • Monitor supply stock levels and report needs.
  • Notify housekeeping, maintenance, biomedical engineering, and others to ensure proper equipment and a safe environment is maintained.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of stock in medication room, exam room bedside carts, and specialty carts.
  • Assist with health unit coordination tasks and reception responsibilities as needed.
  • Attend department meetings and educational sessions.
  • Assist in orienting and training of new ED Technicians.
  • Use problem solving skills and provide effective communication with patients, patient families, health care providers and ancillary departments within the organization to provide quality patient care.
