About The Position

As an Emergency Department Technician at Howard University Hospital, you will play an essential role in delivering safe, efficient, and compassionate care in our fast-paced Emergency Department. Working under the direction of the Registered Nurse, you will perform a range of technical duties and selected treatments that directly support the patient plan of care and the interdisciplinary team. This position reflects Howard University Hospital’s more than 150-year tradition of excellence, service, and community advocacy.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • One of the following certifications required: DC Board of Nursing PCT registration, national EMT certification (NREMT), or national Paramedic certification (NREMT)
  • Candidates not yet holding one of the above certifications may qualify through the following pathways per DC regulations (Title 17 DCMR Chapter 97): Completion of a DC Board of Nursing–approved PCT, EMT, or Paramedic training program Successful completion of a practical nursing (LPN) or registered nursing (RN) “Fundamentals of Nursing” course and acute care clinical that includes skills specified in DC PCT regulations Credentials evaluation by a DC Board of Nursing–recognized organization indicating equivalent education as an RN or LPN (for nurses educated outside the United States) Minimum of 1,000 hours of practice within the last 36 months as a Navy or Air Force basic medical technician corpsman, Air Force independent duty medical technician, or Army health care specialist Minimum of 1,000 hours of practice within the last 36 months as a nationally certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) or more years of hands-on experience as a Patient Care Technician, EMT, or Paramedic preferred
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy course preferred

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the RN, perform technical duties and selected treatments including insertion of intravenous lines/Heparin locks, EKGs, and telemetry monitoring in support of the patient plan of care
  • Assist with patient care activities including personal hygiene, special skin care, ambulation, transfer, and treatment procedures such as enemas, ostomy care, oral suctioning, catheterization, bed making, and sterile dressings
  • Make regular patient visits to provide quick response to patient needs; assist with ambulation and range of motion
  • Observe, document, and monitor vital signs; measure and record intake (fluid/food) and output (bodily functions/drainage)
  • Practice infection control procedures and observe Standard Precautions including appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment; perform minor housekeeping tasks to maintain clean patient areas
  • Collect specimens including venipuncture; properly label all specimens and assist nursing staff with requisitioning
  • Assist with obtaining basic patient information as part of the nursing history or ongoing assessment; report abnormal values or changes in patient condition to the appropriate nurse or supervisor
  • Run errands, procure equipment, and set up equipment as needed
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities related and appropriate to the position and area
