About The Position

The Emergency Department Tech is a full-time position responsible for performing patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff. This role involves assisting with various procedures, monitoring patients, documenting interventions, and ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available. The position also requires maintaining high customer service standards, collaborating with peers, and performing clerical functions as needed. The role operates within a high-stress environment due to unpredictable patient volumes and critical services.

Requirements

  • 2-3 yrs. of hospital patient care or pre-hospital patient care experience or completion of 1 yr. of nursing school clinical rotations or Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Ability to use keyboard, see computer screen.
  • Ability to move / lift patients and push carts, etc.
  • Current CPR certification
  • EMT-Ps licensed by IDPH may complete the house wide competency to start IVs, saline locks, and administer IV fluids.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff.
  • Assist nursing and physicians with various invasive procedures.
  • Perform bedside monitor application and lead placement, cardiac monitor, NIBP, pulse ox.
  • Perform 12 lead EKGs, phlebotomy, orthopedic post molds and splints, crutch training.
  • Monitor and discontinue urinary catheters.
  • Assist patients with ADLs and toileting.
  • Document all interventions in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist with application of hard and soft restraints and monitor behavioral health patients.
  • Immediately report concerns regarding patient status to nursing and medical staff.
  • Ensure adequate supplies and equipment are available and maintained.
  • Continually assess levels of medical supplies and equipment, and communicate needs.
  • Ensure adequate levels of linen are available.
  • Perform gross cleaning of used sterile instruments and transport them for cleaning.
  • Clean flexible scope and fiberoptic laryngoscope blades.
  • Monitor equipment function and report/remove malfunctions.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of equipment and supplies.
  • Complete patient rounds on an hourly basis, managing patient expectations.
  • Make rounds on patients in the ED waiting room.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care in accordance with ED quality initiatives.
  • Maintain annual competencies.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Maintain basic knowledge of clerical functions for coverage.
  • Communicate with ED Charge Nurse and fellow ED Techs.
  • Transport patients, supplies, and equipment interdepartmentally.
  • Transport blood products, medications, x-rays, and medical supplies as needed.
