About The Position

The Emergency Department (ED) Tech Level I is a multi-skilled caregiver who functions under the direction of the professional Registered Nurse. Provides safe, age-appropriate care to the patient by performing various patient care functions and technical procedures. This role involves direct patient care, monitoring, and ensuring the readiness of the patient care area. The ED Tech also plays a role in patient transport and monitoring patients in restraint/seclusion. A key responsibility includes operating and observing cardiac monitors to recognize arrhythmias and operating pulse oximetry monitors. Knowledge of specialty instruments, trays, and trauma resuscitation equipment is essential. The role also includes tracking, delivering, and maintaining telesitter carts, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and performing safety checks. The ED Tech is responsible for assuring the patient care area is appropriately stocked and performing other duties as necessary for patient care delivery.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited program
  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor certification required upon hire
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficiency with desktop computer
  • Demonstrate willingness to be a team-player and a self-starter
  • Proficiency obtaining vital signs using manual processes

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of all specialty instruments and trays, including trauma resuscitation equipment and set-up, ENT trays, special procedure trays.
  • Ability to operate and observe cardiac monitors to ensure recognition of arrhythmias (site specific Kennestone ED), as well as operate pulse oximetry monitors.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and document vital signs; inform nurse if vital signs are abnormal.
  • Perform 12-lead EKG and hand to ED physician.
  • Perform bedside blood sugar testing; inform nurse if result is abnormal.
  • Measure and apply extremity splints as directed by nurse or physician.
  • Instruct patient regarding safe crutch ambulation techniques with return demonstration by patient.
  • Perform oral suctioning.
  • Perform superficial wound care.
  • Perform urethral catheterization.
  • Prepare sterile trays.
  • Perform dressing applications.
  • Perform phlebotomy.
  • Track, deliver, maintain, and retrieve telesitter carts.
  • Troubleshoot any telesitter cart connectivity issues and place an IT ticket if necessary.
  • Perform safe room guideline checks upon initiation and upon every hand-off thereafter.
  • Perform environmental rounds to ensure safe room guidelines are being maintained.
  • Respond to remote telesitter escalation for face-to-face intervention.
  • Notify Nurse and/or charge Nurse when face to face redirection is required.
  • Transport patients via stretcher or wheelchair, ensuring patient safety.
  • Transport unit supplies.
  • Transport equipment.
  • Transport patient medications.
  • Monitor patients in restraint/seclusion per policy frequency.
  • Document monitoring as per policy.
  • Notify nurse of abnormal findings or observations during monitoring.
  • Recognize cardiac rhythms and communicate findings to registered professional as appropriate.
  • Provide accurate patient information for each monitor in use.
  • Clean and maintain monitors and pumps in the monitor room.
  • Assure patient care area is appropriately stocked.
