About The Position

The Emergency Department Physician will serve at the Hopi Health Care Center (HHCC), a Joint Commission-accredited Critical Access Hospital located in Polacca, AZ. This facility is the only healthcare provider on the Hopi Reservation, serving approximately 18,000 people. The role involves providing 24/7 Emergency Department services, managing high-acuity patients in a rural setting with limited specialty support, and documenting all clinical encounters in the electronic health record. This is a unique opportunity to serve a historically underserved community and gain experience in rural emergency medicine and Indian Health Service operations.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited institution.
  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Completion of an approved residency in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or related specialty.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible by ABMS or AOA – Emergency Medicine preferred.
  • For non-EM residency: minimum 5 years post-residency ED experience preferred.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, ATLS, and PALS certifications required.
  • Recent procedure logs required for Emergency Department privileges.

Nice To Haves

  • Rural/remote, Critical Access Hospital, or IHS/Tribal experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, stabilize, treat, manage, admit, discharge, consult, transfer, and document care for patients presenting to the HHCC Emergency Department.
  • Provide after-hours inpatient coverage, Fast Track support, and urgent follow-up as authorized.
  • Coordinate patient transfers to higher levels of care when clinically indicated.
  • Manage high-acuity patients in a rural Critical Access Hospital environment with limited in-house specialty support.
  • Participate in emergency response, disaster response, and mass casualty protocols as required.
  • Document all clinical encounters in the electronic health record in accordance with facility policies.
