About The Position

The Emergency Access Representative is responsible for obtaining and verifying insurance and billing information, auditing charts/registrations for completeness and accuracy, preparing patient identification and paperwork, communicating effectively in person and on the telephone, handling stress and making decisions under pressure, assisting in training new employees, participating in departmental meetings and supporting organizational goals, demonstrating competence in core job functions, addressing patient, family, and visitor needs, managing time and organizing tasks efficiently, and performing department-specific duties. This role also involves assisting Emergency Department and Communication Center staff when needed, including patient wayfinding, supporting nursing staff, performing paging, and monitoring hospital systems. The representative must also demonstrate awareness of age-specific, cultural, spiritual, and physical patient needs.

Requirements

  • 50 wpm keyboard skills
  • Excellent spelling, math, and problem solving skills
  • Communicate effectively orally
  • Ability to organize work and attend to detail
  • 1 year clerical experience including reception, telephone skills and filing
  • Medium physical demand level capabilities
  • Must be able to work independently as well as with coworkers, other staff professionals, guild volunteers, patients and visitors.
  • Must be able to prioritize work, organize time efficiently and attend to detail.
  • Must be able to sit, walk and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds, push wheelchair with up to 250 pounds, and assist a patient in and out of a chair, wheelchair.
  • Strong visual and auditory abilities

Responsibilities

  • Obtaining and accurately verifying insurance and billing information for all types of insurance.
  • Self-auditing and reviewing charts/registrations daily for completeness maintaining high accuracy levels (>95%).
  • Preparing identification bracelets and paperwork used during patient care and routing it appropriately in a timely manner.
  • Communicating effectively in person and on the telephone with various personality types.
  • Handling stress, working under pressure, and making decisions effectively.
  • Assisting in the training and orientation of new employees within the department.
  • Participating in departmental meetings, discussions, and supporting the organization’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan.
  • Demonstrating competence in job responsibilities through proficiency testing, skill demonstration, and adherence to organizational standards.
  • Addressing patient, family, and visitor needs while ensuring resolution of concerns by contacting the appropriate department.
  • Prioritizing work, organizing tasks efficiently, and attending to detail.
  • Assisting the Emergency Department staff when needed, including patient wayfinding and supporting Nursing staff.
  • Assisting the Communication Center staff when needed, including performing routine, emergency and code paging, monitoring hospital environmental system alarms and security systems, and notifying responsible departments.
  • Demonstrating awareness of age specific practices of the patient(s) while performing job tasks.
  • Demonstrating awareness of cultural and spiritual practices of the patient(s) while performing job tasks.
  • Demonstrating awareness of the functional status and physical needs of our patient(s) while performing job tasks.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
