Embedded Software Engineer

Technology Advancement Group•Ashburn, VA
•$130,000 - $160,000

About The Position

Technology Advancement Group (TAG), a veteran-owned systems integrator in Ashburn, Virginia, designs, builds, and integrates assured positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) hardware and software for the Department of Defense and its suppliers. TAG is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to architect and build software for next-generation PNT products. Reporting to the Technical Director, this engineer will lead architecture and development, evaluate and select processors and subsystems, write embedded code for single-core and multi-core processors, and integrate GNSS receivers, IMUs, and other sensors. The role owns decisions from processor selection through shipped code and works closely with hardware, systems, and test engineers. The position customizes and integrates Android OS for embedded devices and custom hardware, working in the Linux kernel, device drivers, the hardware abstraction layer (HAL), and system services. Responsibilities include board bring-up and BSP development, peripheral driver development and optimization, debugging low-level bootloader, kernel, and driver issues, tuning performance and power consumption, and securing platforms with secure boot, SELinux, and dm-verity. The role also develops code and state machines for 32-bit microcontrollers running bare metal, an RTOS, or Android. It works with SPI, I2C, UART, MIPI, CAN, and USB interfaces, GPIOs, interrupts, and wireless links such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and ISM-band radios. Power management includes power islands and states, core switching, and dynamic clocking. The role is based in Ashburn; on-site work is preferred, and a hybrid schedule is possible.

Requirements

  • Experience customizing and integrating Android or embedded Linux on custom hardware, including work in the kernel, device drivers, HAL, and system services.
  • Experience bringing up a new board and building or maintaining its BSP, including debugging bootloader, kernel, and driver failures on hardware.
  • Experience writing firmware and state machines for 32-bit microcontrollers on bare metal and an RTOS.
  • Experience with SPI, I2C, UART, MIPI, CAN, and USB, as well as GPIOs and interrupts.
  • Experience evaluating and selecting processors or subsystems, or making major architecture decisions, for a product that shipped.
  • Experience writing code for multi-core processors and optimizing system performance and power consumption using power states, core switching, or dynamic clocking.
  • Must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR: a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or person granted asylum.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating GNSS receivers, IMUs, or other navigation sensors; military receiver experience is ideal.
  • Understanding of how navigation sensor data combines into position and time.
  • Experience integrating Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, or other ISM-band radios into an embedded device.
  • Experience implementing secure boot, SELinux policy, or dm-verity and maintaining device compliance through software updates.
  • Current U.S. government security clearance at any level.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and select processors and subsystems, making major product architecture decisions.
  • Write embedded code for single-core and multi-core processors.
  • Integrate civilian and military GNSS receivers, IMUs, and other state-of-the-art sensors.
  • Customize and integrate Android OS for embedded devices and custom hardware.
  • Work in the Linux kernel, device drivers, HAL, and system services to achieve required performance, functionality, and hardware compatibility.
  • Lead board bring-up and BSP development.
  • Develop and optimize drivers for peripherals.
  • Debug low-level issues involving bootloaders, kernel panics, and driver failures.
  • Analyze and tune system performance and power consumption.
  • Secure platforms using secure boot, SELinux, and dm-verity.
  • Write code and state machines for 32-bit microcontrollers on bare metal, an RTOS, or Android.
  • Work with SPI, I2C, UART, MIPI, CAN, and USB interfaces, GPIOs, and interrupts.
  • Integrate wireless links such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, and ISM-band radios.
  • Manage power through power islands and states, core switching, and dynamic clocking.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, and test engineers.
