Embedded Software Engineer

ALTEN Technology•Carson, CA

About The Position

ALTEN Technology USA is an engineering company supporting clients across aerospace, medical devices, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, rail, and other industries. The company has more than 3,000 experts across North America and is part of the global ALTEN Group, which has more than 57,000 engineers in 30 countries. It supports product development from consulting through full project outsourcing and describes a culture emphasizing mentorship, career growth, and employee support. The role is described in the posting as a senior software engineering position focused on analyzing, designing, developing, debugging, and modifying embedded control software for commercial aerospace electronics used in harsh and hazardous environments. Applications include controllers, three-phase active rectifiers with power-factor correction, motor control, DC-DC converters, and AC drives. The engineer owns or supports technical teams and projects related to W&W System Components, working with cross-functional internal and external groups to deliver robust, airworthy designs within budget, schedule, and internal requirements. The position also involves leading or participating in group- and company-level improvement activities. The engineer develops control algorithms, software and hardware/software interface documentation, verification plans and procedures, and design and test reports. The role includes requirements analysis, system and subsystem design, software implementation, debugging, performance optimization, product testing, and support for feasibility, development, validation, verification, and qualification activities at Monogram and external test laboratories. The engineer may independently own smaller or medium-sized software development efforts or lead a team, review and approve colleagues’ work, and guide and train less experienced engineers. The posting also calls for producing RTCA/DO-178 process documents and following airworthiness, customer, and internal standards. The listed salary range is $115,000–$130,000. Actual pay depends on factors including location and the candidate’s job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience. Selected candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.

Requirements

  • Hands-on programming skills in C/C++, VHDL/Verilog, and/or scripting languages such as Perl, Python, or PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of embedded systems architecture and programming.
  • Programming skills for developing firmware on TMS320F28XX DSP, PIC16XX, MC68XXX, or X86 DSPs/microcontrollers.
  • Knowledge and understanding of active rectifiers, power-factor correction, inverter, and motor-control software design.
  • Design knowledge of CAN, ARINC 429, I2C, SPI, and RS232 software modules.
  • Ability to use electrical-circuit simulation tools such as PSPICE and system-level simulation tools such as PSIM, MATLAB, or Simulink.
  • Ability to communicate and work in a team environment; strong work ethic and commitment to excellence; openness to others’ ideas and willingness to try new things.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, develop, debug, and modify embedded control software for commercial aerospace electronics, including controllers, three-phase active rectifiers, motor control, DC-DC converters, and AC drives.
  • Design and implement control algorithms for power-electronic applications and develop embedded software for active rectifier and motor-control electronics.
  • Contribute to system design and independently develop subsystem designs that meet requirements, considering tradeoffs among requirements, cost, and reliability.
  • Test and debug power-electronics controllers, including source-level and assembly-level debugging; optimize software performance with control systems engineers.
  • Work with suppliers to review control software designs; lead or support software design reviews; and interface with vendors, customers, OEMs, technical analysts, and other departments on technical issues.
  • Own or lead small- and medium-sized software development efforts; review, check, and approve peers’ and junior engineers’ work; and provide guidance and training to lower-level engineers.
  • Analyze customer requirements and validate them through analysis, modeling, prototyping, or existing product performance.
  • Create software requirements specifications, hardware/software interface control documents, verification plans, design documents, design verification test procedures and reports, and product test reports.
  • Perform product performance testing and analysis to verify requirements and support feasibility, development, validation, verification, and qualification testing at Monogram and external test laboratories.
  • Develop design tools, capture lessons learned, and improve the rotating-equipment development process.
  • Apply technical problem-solving, conduct and present trade studies, and independently develop solutions to problems requiring research, resourcefulness, and creativity.
  • Perform RTCA/DO-178 process tasks and generate PSAC, SDP, SVP, SCMP, SQAP, SCI, and SAS documents.
  • Ensure designs meet airworthiness standards, customer requirements, and ZWWS internal standards; follow and promote company policies and procedures.
  • Process engineering changes in the development of water and waste systems and equipment.
  • Assess standard work and support or lead improvement projects; coordinate across engineering, industrialization, and operations; and provide input to program and project managers.
