Embedded Software Engineer, Satellite Antenna (Starlink)

SpaceX•Redmond, WA
•$125,000 - $200,000

About The Position

As a member of SpaceX’s Starlink Antenna Software team, the Embedded Software Engineer owns software for bringing up, characterizing, and operating advanced phased array systems. The role covers multiple layers of the stack, from embedded software running on microcontrollers in custom beamforming ASICs to antenna characterization in anechoic chambers, factory RF testing, and tools for analyzing the on-orbit performance of the satellite fleet. Prior RF experience is not required; the role is suited to ambitious engineers who enjoy solving challenging interdisciplinary problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering.
  • At least 1 year of programming experience in embedded C, C++, or Rust; internships, collegiate clubs, and project work can count.
  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission-critical deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and understanding of RF fundamentals and/or communications theory.
  • Familiarity with radio-related laboratory measurement equipment and techniques, such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Experience with phased array antenna systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, autonomously driven, and demanding start-up atmosphere.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software for custom modem and beamformer silicon ASICs that form the foundation of Starlink’s phased array antennas.
  • Write flight-critical software to ensure the antenna operates as intended throughout the satellite lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with phased array antenna engineers to develop and implement new antenna measurement techniques as part of the CI/CD process.
  • Analyze on-orbit performance data and investigate methods to improve performance and debug issues.
  • Develop production RF test features to verify hardware in the factory while maintaining a rapid production rate.
  • Design and build automated measurement systems to characterize phased arrays radiating at 10–20 GHz.
  • Provide software engineering expertise and mission-critical support to the broader Payload Engineering organization.

Benefits

  • Potential eligibility for long-term incentives in the form of company stock or long-term cash awards.
  • Potential discretionary bonuses.
  • Ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Comprehensive medical coverage.
  • Vision coverage.
  • Dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
