Embedded Software Engineer

WorkstreamMenlo Park, CA

About The Position

Workstream is seeking an engineer who is proficient in embedded Linux, RTOS, and bare-metal MCU code, and enjoys working at the intersection of firmware and hardware. This role involves owning the software responsible for device functionality, including capturing, recording, and communication. The engineer will collaborate with the Electrical Engineering team on board bring-up and sensor integration, and develop essential tooling to support a fast-paced team environment. The position is with the Robotics team, which focuses on advancing AI and robotics through the development of scalable data collection and annotation pipelines, and the creation of connected hardware for real-world AI applications.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of experience shipping embedded software on hardware that has reached users.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python.
  • Exposure to embedded Linux (device drivers, device tree, boot process) and/or bare-metal/RTOS firmware.
  • Comfort working at the hardware boundary: reading datasheets, bringing up boards, developing drivers for new sensor modules, and evaluating hardware tradeoffs.
  • Comfort using electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) and firmware build and debug tools.
  • A bias toward reliability across diverse settings and geographies, with a habit of thorough testing and honest measurement.
  • Passion for learning and building, often demonstrated through side projects.
  • B.S. in EE, CE, CS, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cameras, camera interfaces (e.g., MIPI CSI-2), DSP/ISP, or video/media pipelines, especially handling multiple simultaneous streams.
  • Experience with MCU firmware and low-level bring-up, including bootloaders and an RTOS such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
  • Familiarity with connectivity and protocols such as BLE, Wi-Fi, and USB.
  • Experience designing SDKs/APIs for consumption by other teams.
  • Experience with OTA, telemetry, or managing software across a fleet of connected devices.
  • Experience with CI/CD and test automation.
  • Experience shipping wearable or consumer hardware, and working directly with hardware/EE colleagues and contract manufacturers.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement, and test the on-device software that controls recording, sensors, storage, and power, ensuring reliable operation over long sessions.
  • Bring up and debug new hardware in collaboration with the EE team, including part selection, interface definition, driver development for new sensor modules, and board bring-up.
  • Investigate and solve core technical problems related to the device, prototyping solutions, measuring performance, and contributing to build decisions.
  • Own the device's interface to the rest of the system, developing and maintaining a clean, documented, and well-tested on-device API/SDK and protocols for app and cloud integration.
  • Build tooling and automation for firmware development, testing, and calibration to enable rapid iteration and scalable production.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Comprehensive health coverage: medical, dental, and vision (95% premium coverage for employees, 85% for dependents)
  • In-office amenities and stocked kitchen
  • 401K Plan
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Learning/development stipend
  • Flexible PTO
