Senior / Staff Embedded Software Engineer

Heron Power•Scotts Valley, CA
•$140,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Heron Power is a startup developing power electronics for the modern grid, including converters (inverters and rectifiers) for connecting large-scale renewables, storage, and loads. The Senior/Staff Embedded Software Engineer will help build and shape the embedded firmware platform for Heron’s power conversion products, driving architecture decisions, quality, reliability, and delivery across the firmware stack. The role combines hands-on embedded engineering with system architecture and technical leadership. The engineer will collaborate with firmware, controls, cloud, and hardware teams on device operation and monitoring, covering RTOS architecture, control firmware, bootloaders, diagnostics, safety infrastructure, communications, testing, and production firmware processes. They will also contribute to engineering practices and provide informal mentorship to other embedded engineers.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of embedded firmware development experience with shipped products.
  • Expert-level embedded C/C++ skills.
  • Deep experience with RTOS, bootloaders, and low-level hardware drivers.
  • Experience working within and contributing to large embedded system architectures.
  • Familiarity with firmware CI/CD and automated testing frameworks.
  • Strong hardware debugging skills, including use of oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Collaborative mindset and interest in helping other engineers grow.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with real-time control systems or power electronics.
  • Experience with safety-critical or high-reliability firmware, including IEC 61508 or UL 1998.
  • Experience with secure boot and device security.
  • Experience integrating embedded systems with cloud or IoT platforms.
  • Familiarity with FPGA or ASIC.
  • Production manufacturing and field support experience.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and drive embedded firmware architecture across Heron products.
  • Participate in design reviews, identify systemic risks, and help establish coding standards and engineering practices.
  • Serve as a technical resource and informal mentor for other embedded engineers.
  • Collaborate across firmware and hardware boundaries on system-level decisions.
  • Implement and improve RTOS-based firmware for high-performance power conversion.
  • Design and build low-latency control infrastructure, fault management, telemetry, real-time scheduling, and drivers and peripherals such as PWM, ADC, and communications.
  • Evaluate and select microcontrollers and SoCs for new platforms.
  • Build safety-critical and high-reliability firmware systems.
  • Design bootloaders, secure firmware architecture, and update mechanisms.
  • Implement on-device logging, diagnostics, tracing, and observability tools.
  • Define device-side communication interfaces and data models.
  • Define unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing strategies.
  • Improve developer tooling and validation pipelines.
