About The Position

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will join ALTEN’s engineering team to support activities within the clean energy and advanced technology sector. You will develop, validate, and support control system software used in advanced engineering applications. Working across software, controls, systems, and test engineering teams, you will contribute to software development, investigate controller performance, support test rigs and bench testing, and ensure requirements are captured and delivered throughout the product development lifecycle. The role is based in Loughborough and is described as remote, with clearance possible. The stated experience level is mid-level (3–9 years of experience). The position includes developing Cell Voltage Monitoring software; supporting air module system validation, including flow meter algorithms and interface verification; and developing, validating, and supporting turbine Variable Guide Vane control strategies. You will also work with control algorithms developed in Simulink, debug and optimise C software, and contribute to software lifecycle documentation, requirements management, testing, and validation. ALTEN offers engineering projects across multiple industries, ongoing learning and mentoring, and career development tailored to individual goals. The role may require the candidate to hold or obtain Security Clearance. Onboarding includes a Baseline Personnel Security Standard check; details and eligibility criteria are discussed during the interview process.

Requirements

  • Experience developing embedded or control system software.
  • Proficiency in C programming and software debugging.
  • Experience working with control algorithms and Simulink models.
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and software verification activities.
  • Experience supporting test rigs, bench testing, or laboratory-based engineering programmes.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause investigation skills.
  • Ability to manage and trace software requirements through development and testing.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
  • Experience working within a software, controls, or systems engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of software testing, validation, and integration processes.
  • May need to hold or be willing to obtain Security Clearance and meet Baseline Personnel Security Standard requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Cell Voltage Monitoring systems.
  • Knowledge of DFMEA and requirements derivation methodologies.
  • Experience working with flow measurement systems or control valves.
  • Familiarity with model-based development approaches.
  • Experience within clean energy, automotive, aerospace, or industrial engineering sectors.
  • Knowledge of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or bench validation activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Cell Voltage Monitoring software, including detailed design, coding, testing, and handover activities.
  • Generate software lifecycle documentation and development process deliverables.
  • Support component and subsystem bench testing activities.
  • Support validation of air module systems, including flow meter algorithms and interface verification.
  • Develop, validate, and support turbine Variable Guide Vane (VGV) control strategies.
  • Support and maintain bench test equipment and test rig control systems.
  • Investigate controller behaviour and software performance issues.
  • Manage DFMEA actions and derive software requirements from engineering risk assessments.
  • Capture, analyse, and elaborate software requirements for monitor lane and test rig control systems.
  • Debug, test, and optimise software written in C.
  • Work with and support the implementation of control algorithms developed in Simulink.
  • Collaborate with systems, controls, software, and test engineers to deliver validated solutions.
