Embedded Firmware Engineer II

Nevada Heat Treating LLC•Webster, TX
•$98,000 - $138,000

About The Position

Vitesse Systems is seeking an Embedded Firmware Engineer II to join a multidisciplinary engineering team designing robotic systems and electromechanical hardware for clients across a wide range of industries, including applications on Earth and in outer space. The role focuses on developing and troubleshooting hardware and firmware, which may involve basic hands-on mechanical and electrical assembly to diagnose problems and implement fixes during development. The engineer will develop firmware, drivers, and embedded devices; bring up and integrate electromechanical systems; and work with electrical engineers and technicians on board bring-up, integration, and testing. The position also involves translating hardware requirements into firmware and embedded software requirements, contributing to documentation and test activities, and supporting hardware assembly, testing, and integration through travel when required. Vitesse Systems provides engineered antenna, thermal management, and mission-critical solutions for radar, electronic warfare, and C5ISR applications. Work is subject to ITAR and EAR restrictions; the posting requires proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline applicable to robotics.
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience developing production-grade firmware and embedded software; experience with electromechanical hardware and robotic systems is preferred.
  • Experience testing, validating, and managing firmware deployments for products in the field.
  • Strong C++ and Python programming skills and good coding, commenting, and documentation practices.
  • Proficiency coding embedded systems using C/C++, VHDL, or Verilog in a Linux environment.
  • Ability to contribute to design documentation for test protocols, reports, and software requirements.
  • Experience with full life-cycle library and application development, Git version control, software testing, and continuous integration.
  • Ability to read circuit diagrams and perform basic debugging.
  • Development experience with robotic systems and theory, including mechatronics, motor control, kinematics, dynamics, sensing, control, and planning.
  • Experience with I/O technologies and embedded systems, including communication protocols such as SPI, EtherCAT, Ethernet, UART, CAN, I2C, and RS 232; actuators, motors, motor controllers, and sensors such as incremental and absolute encoders, analog sensors, and IMUs.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency to comply with ITAR regulations.
  • Motivation to learn the knowledge needed to complete the work.
  • Familiarity and proficiency using basic electronics tools such as a soldering iron, crimpers, and oscilloscope.
  • Ability to work well on a team and take responsibility for individual tasks, including open-ended tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for experience with electromechanical hardware and robotic systems.
  • Spaceflight hardware and avionics experience.

  • Software design or qualification experience for radiation-hardened electronics.
  • Knowledge of automated software testing and continuous integration systems.
  • Real-time operating system (RTOS) development experience.
  • ROS experience and experience with ROS hardware integration.

Responsibilities

  • Write code for firmware, drivers, and embedded devices.
  • Perform hands-on bring-up and integration of electromechanical systems and devices, including motors, motor controllers, linear and rotary actuators, and analog and digital sensors.
  • Work with electrical engineers and technicians to support board bring-up, integration, and testing.
  • Translate hardware requirements into firmware and embedded software requirements.
  • Take technical responsibility for work and meet deadlines.
  • Improve technical skills and company processes, and teach and learn from peers.
  • Travel when required to support hardware assembly, testing, and integration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
