Embedded Controls Engineer, Airborne Electronic Hardware

BETA Technologies•Raleigh, NC
•$100,000 - $130,000

About The Position

The Embedded Controls Engineer - AEH works as part of a multidisciplinary team developing products for BETA’s electric aircraft and customer platforms. The role develops embedded software and integrates it into hardware during early product development and, as needed, to support full-scale production. It bridges hardware and software at the circuit-board level in an aerospace environment, with a focus on controls and embedded systems. The engineer contributes to control software for aerospace electronic equipment such as flight controllers, flight management systems, battery management systems, aircraft charge control systems, and electric motor controllers. The role designs, develops, and tests low-level source code, model-based software, and control algorithms executing at the microcontroller level, and configures hardware through software to meet architecture and functional requirements.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Controls Engineering; an M.S. is desired.
  • 3–5 years of experience in embedded software development.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB and Simulink or other model-based design and code-generation tools.
  • Experience with closed-loop control applications or modeling.

Nice To Haves

  • Electric motor control experience.
  • Electromagnet design, development, and control experience.
  • Experience with ARM microcontrollers, including STM32, TMS570, or AM26x series, and C2000 microcontrollers.
  • Electromagnetic actuator development experience.
  • Hands-on experience building and assembling system test setups.
  • Experience with rapid prototype development of hardware and software.
  • Experience with power electronics and/or switched power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test low-level source code, model-based software, and control algorithms.
  • Develop and write code to support control algorithms.
  • Troubleshoot hardware/software issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Assist with hardware bring-up on prototype products as needed.
  • Define, capture, and analyze hardware/software interface definitions.
  • Support the design team in hardware and software architecture trade studies, subsystem development, and definition.

Benefits

  • Restricted Stock Units and Performance Stock Units for full-time team members.
  • Onsite healthcare in Vermont.
  • Comprehensive medical coverage.
  • Dental and vision coverage.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage.
