Electronics Embedded Hardware Engineer

Altronic•Girard, OH

About The Position

Altronic is seeking a skilled Embedded Electronics Hardware Engineer to develop rugged embedded control systems for the industrial stationary engine market. The role focuses primarily on schematic capture and PCB layout, owning the core hardware design process from translating system requirements into detailed schematics through designing multilayer PCBs and bringing up and debugging prototypes in the lab. The engineer will work with systems engineers, firmware developers, and manufacturing to deliver reliable products for harsh industrial environments, including power generation, gas compression, and heavy industrial applications. The position involves designing analog and digital circuits; selecting and analyzing components; producing high-reliability, typically 4–6-layer PCB layouts; and validating prototypes and integrated systems. Designs must address vibration, shock, extreme temperatures, EMI/EMC, thermal management, manufacturability, testability, and long-term field reliability. The engineer will also contribute to design resources and processes, participate in design reviews and field-return root-cause analysis, and support legacy products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in embedded hardware design, with strong emphasis on schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Proficiency with EDA tools; KiCad is preferred.
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital design, power electronics, high-speed signals, and EMI best practices.
  • Experience bringing up and debugging complex prototypes in a laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with industrial- or automotive-grade design practices, including derating, conformal coating, and wide-temperature components.
  • Hands-on skills with laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, soldering stations, and logic analyzers.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of engines and how they operate.
  • Experience designing electronics for stationary engines, heavy equipment, or similar harsh-environment applications.
  • Knowledge of industrial protocols such as CAN/J1939 and Modbus, and safety certifications such as CSA, UL, IEC, and ATEX.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, design, and develop analog and digital circuits.
  • Create detailed, well-documented schematics for embedded systems, including microcontrollers, power supplies, analog sensor interfaces, high-voltage drivers, and industrial communication circuits.
  • Select components and perform derating and worst-case circuit analyses for reliability in harsh conditions.
  • Design high-reliability multilayer PCBs, typically 4–6 layers, considering signal integrity, power distribution, thermal management, EMI/EMC mitigation, and mechanical constraints.
  • Optimize layouts for manufacturability, testability, and long-term field reliability, including vibration, shock, and operation from -40°C to +85°C.
  • Personally own critical designs while collaborating with external layout resources when needed.
  • Assemble, power up, and debug first-article prototypes using laboratory and environmental test equipment.
  • Identify and resolve hardware issues such as noise, timing, power sequencing, and thermal hotspots.
  • Support firmware integration and system-level validation on engine test stands.
  • Work with systems engineers to refine requirements and architecture.
  • Contribute to the component library, design guidelines, and design-for-excellence processes.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis for field returns and sustaining legacy products.
  • Conduct design reviews.
  • Work with hardware network communications protocols including CAN, RS485, and Ethernet.
