About The Position

The ELL Teacher will establish a class environment that fosters learning and personal growth, helping students develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for continued education. This role involves assessing student abilities, developing and implementing lesson plans, and maintaining a classroom climate conducive to learning. The teacher will also identify student needs, cooperate with other staff, maintain professional competence, and communicate with students and parents regarding progress. Confidentiality of student records is essential. The position requires participation in school-level planning, faculty meetings, and other school system groups, as well as maintaining professional rapport with colleagues and support staff. Demonstrating positive parent/community relations skills, fulfilling professional responsibilities beyond the classroom, and modeling appropriate personal characteristics are also key aspects of this role. This position is subject to the Students First Act of 2011, and Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill it by transfer of a qualified internal applicant. No credit toward tenure is earned in the initial school year if hired after September 30.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. Degree in the area of instructional responsibility.
  • Alabama State Department of Education Teaching Certification in the area of instructional responsibility.
  • Knowledge of state core curriculum content standards and district educational goals and objectives of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of student academic progress toward stated objectives of instruction.
  • Knowledge of school’s program of studies related to mission, goals, and organization.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to develop and implement lesson plans based on district and state courses of study in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Ability to use and manage technology including, but not limited to, e-mail, internet, Microsoft Office Programs, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy, and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Possesses the physical and emotional ability to fulfill the contract period.
  • Legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.

Responsibilities

  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Plan class activities and lesson presentations that are age-appropriate and meet the individual needs, interests, and ability levels of all students.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
  • Maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through in-service education and other professional growth activities.
  • Communicate instructional expectations and student progress (or lack of progress) to students and parents, either in writing or verbally.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all students’ records, grades, performance, and all other related matters.
  • Participate in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees, and other school system groups.
  • Establish and maintain a professional level of rapport with other teachers, team leaders, department heads, district-level coordinators and/or program directors, and instructional support and service employees of the school district.
  • Demonstrate positive and technically competent parent/community relations skills, including oral communication, written communications, and listening skills.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities beyond the classroom, including participation in school co-curricular programs, school and district program improvement efforts, and community and parent groups.
  • Abide by and promote high ethical standards.
  • Model appropriate personal characteristics and work habits that are consistent with personal development goals established for students.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of employment and certification as may be assigned.
