Elizabeth Frankel Fellowship
About The Position
The Elizabeth Frankel Fellowship Program, established in 2022, honors Liz Frankel's passion for supporting law students in their advocacy for immigrant children and families. This 10-week program trains fellows to zealously advocate for children, embodying Liz's vision of honoring the child's wishes through strategic best interests advocacy. Fellows will serve as Child Advocates, engaging with stakeholders, conducting legal research and writing, and drafting best interests determinations under staff guidance. They will also participate in policy advocacy initiatives. The fellowship is based in Houston, Texas, with a required week in the Harlingen office to understand border issues and travel to the New York office to learn about its immigration system. The Fellowship Program runs from June 7, 2027, to August 13, 2027, with fellows working 35 hours per week.
Requirements
- Law Students who are rising 2 L’s or 3 L’s
- Valid driver’s license and access to a car
- Ability to travel by plane, car and other conveyances within U.S.
- Ability to use computer, telephone, and copy machine.
Nice To Haves
- Lived experience/knowledge that lends insight into supporting immigrant children and their families
- Bilingual in Spanish and English (oral and written)
- Additional consideration will be given to law students who come from backgrounds/circumstances which prevent them from engaging in pro bono work during the summer
Responsibilities
- Serve as Child Advocates for individual children.
- Communicate with stakeholders.
- Conduct legal research and writing.
- Draft best interests determinations under the guidance of Young Center staff.
- Engage in policy advocacy through ongoing initiatives at the Young Center.
- Spend one week in the Harlingen office to understand immigration patterns, enforcement, and advocacy on the U.S.-Mexico border.
- Travel to the Young Center’s New York office to learn about the immigration system in New York.
