About The Position

On June 16, 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the NYC Public Housing Preservation Act, which authorized the creation of the NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust (the Trust). The Trust is a public benefit corporation that will oversee the renovation and rehabilitation of the City’s public housing developments, owned by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). NYCHA will remain the permanent owner of the land/buildings and will enter a long-term ground lease with the Trust to secure Section 8 vouchers. The selected staff member will be a NYCHA employee assigned to Nostrand Houses and will work on behalf of the NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust. The selected Elevator Mechanic Helper will support the Elevator Mechanic and, under direct supervision, assist in the maintenance and repair of electrically and/or hydraulically powered passenger and/or freight elevators.

Requirements

  • Three years of full-time satisfactory experience acquired within the last ten years in the maintenance, repair and/or installation of passenger or freight elevators; or
  • At least two years of experience as described in “1” above plus at least 600 hours of training in the maintenance, repair and/or installation of passenger or freight elevators acquired in a trade school, technical school, or vocational high school, approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency, to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience; or
  • Satisfactory completion of an approved career ladder training program for Elevator Mechanic’s Helpers sponsored by the New York City Housing Authority.
  • Possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment.
  • Must maintain a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Elevator Mechanic in making mechanical and electrical repairs and adjustments to the elements and components of passenger and freight elevators, which include cables, sheaves, glands, motors, generators, starters, relays and controls, brakes, solenoids, safeties, etc
  • Conduct routine inspections of elevator equipment in a preventative maintenance program
  • Use the tools and instruments essential to elevator maintenance and repair work
  • Clean work areas
  • Perform related duties
