About The Position

The Elementary Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing curriculum programs, accommodating individual student differences, and presenting subject matter according to established guidelines. The role involves employing various instructional techniques, cooperating with staff, planning assignments for aides, and utilizing technology in the learning process. The teacher will assess student progress, potentially sponsor extracurricular activities, and serve as a positive role model. Creating a conducive classroom environment, administering discipline, and ensuring student safety are key aspects of the position. The teacher will also assist in selecting instructional materials, maintain open communication with students and parents, and foster professional relationships with colleagues and the community. Participation in staff development, professional improvement, and adherence to district policies and regulations are expected. The role includes compiling and filing required documents, and attending faculty meetings and committee service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certificate with appropriate certification for Special Education
  • Knowledge of Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines
  • Understanding of board policies, campus policies, and administrative regulations
  • Ability to employ a variety of instructional techniques and media
  • Skills in utilizing technology in the teaching/learning process
  • Ability to assess student accomplishments and provide progress reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain classroom control and administer discipline
  • Knowledge of safety precautions for students and equipment
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining open communication with students and parents
  • Professional, ethical, and responsible behavior

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
  • Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, campus policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student groups involved.
  • Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods in accordance with district requirements.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).
  • Employ the use of technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may sponsor outside activities approved by the school.
  • Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Establish control in the classroom and administer discipline in accordance with board policies, campus policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members.
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in the district staff development program.
  • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documents required.
