About The Position

The Elementary School Exceptional Children's Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills contributing to their educational and social development. This role involves managing instructional time, student behavior, instructional presentation, monitoring student performance, providing feedback, facilitating instruction, and interacting effectively within the educational environment. The teacher will also perform non-instructional duties and participate in state exams, which may require travel and overnight stays. Staff are expected to attend all scheduled district in-person staff development days and departmental/grade band in-person office days. The standard workday is 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with potential for exceptions due to state testing, meetings, or field trips.

Requirements

  • Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
  • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Physical requirements consistent with Light Work due to time spent standing and/or walking.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using a prescribed format.

Responsibilities

  • Manage instructional time by having materials ready, starting lessons quickly, and maintaining high student time-on-task.
  • Manage student behavior by establishing clear rules and procedures for routines, participation, and movement, and by monitoring and addressing inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently.
  • Present instruction effectively by reviewing previous material, introducing new concepts with clear objectives, speaking fluently, using understandable language and relevant examples, assigning tasks with a high success rate, asking appropriate questions, maintaining a brisk pace, making smooth transitions, ensuring clear assignments, and summarizing key points.
  • Monitor student performance by maintaining clear work standards, circulating to check work, using various assessment methods, and posing questions clearly.
  • Provide instructional feedback by offering feedback on in-class work, providing prompt feedback on out-of-class work, affirming correct responses, and offering sustaining feedback after incorrect responses.
  • Facilitate instruction by having an instructional plan aligned with school and system-wide goals, using diagnostic information to revise objectives, maintaining accurate records, aligning objectives with strategies and assessments, and utilizing available resources.
  • Interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
  • Perform non-instructional duties as assigned, adhere to established laws and policies, and engage in professional development.
  • Participate in the administration of various state exams, which may involve travel and overnight stays.
  • Attend all scheduled district in-person staff development days and departmental/grade band in-person office days.
