About The Position

We are seeking a dynamic, highly qualified instrumental music teacher to ignite a love of music for elementary school students. The teacher in this position will be .2 FTE at two elementary schools. This is a unique opportunity to build programs, grow strong relationships with students, and become part of a thriving music community in Seattle Public Schools. The purpose of this itinerant position is to provide elementary instrumental music instruction to 4th and 5th grade students in Seattle Public Schools. Responsibilities include: instruction in woodwinds, percussion, strings, and brass, coordination and supervision of concerts at each assigned school, evaluation of students' learning, attendance at team meetings, and ensuring students exiting the program in 5th grade are prepared for middle school band or orchestra. Applicants must have evidence of strong teaching, classroom management and organizational skills. Teamwork and collaboration are essential, as are strong communication skills to build the program.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State certification with an instrumental music endorsement
  • Must meet No Child Left Behind requirements
  • Demonstrated successful instrumental music teaching experience
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality per district policy and state and federal laws
  • Washington state driver's license and vehicle
  • Evidence of strong teaching, classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Teamwork and collaboration are essential.
  • Strong communication skills to build the program.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications.
  • Effective communication with parents or guardians in a diverse community.
  • Organizing and time management.
  • Decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Basic Microsoft Office software and Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to demonstrate instructional-level proficiency on the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students on basic instruments including the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone and, if time allows, viola, alto saxophone, and percussion.
  • Direct, supervise and coordinate student music performances; assemblies, concerts and other activities during the school day and/or in the evening.
  • Teach to required program expectations using approved curriculum.
  • Provide instruction, assistance, and support to individual students that will encourage participation in instrumental music.
  • Implement techniques for effecting positive student behavior.
  • Participate in both short- and long-term instructional planning.
  • Work cooperatively with other department members to evaluate program and to implement needed improvements.
  • Maintain student records including daily grades, attendance reports, and others as required.
  • Participate in peer and instructional coaching, staff meetings and collaborative team planning.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents or guardians and community.
  • Respond to parents' or guardians' concerns.
  • Enforce school rules and monitor student behavior in non-classroom settings.
  • Perform other tasks as developed by staff, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction, and/or Visual & Performing Arts Manager.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.
  • Participate in a variety of activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
