About The Position

Sapulpa Public Schools seeks a passionate, energetic team player to work with our students as an elementary counselor. This role involves complying with local, state, and federal mandates, following a planned sequential program of guidance activities to enhance student academics and personal, social, and/or career development. The counselor will apply knowledge of current research and theory to counseling programs, comply with state department of education standards, and establish effective rapport with students, parents, and staff. The position requires adherence to all district rules, regulations, policies, and practices.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or the equivalent
  • Meet the state certification/licensure standards for school counseling
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others
  • Demonstrate self discipline and initiative
  • Follow state and district guidelines
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret written information
  • Skill in writing required reports/correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions from others
  • Work with mathematical concepts and apply to practical situations
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form

Responsibilities

  • Register students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
  • Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such areas as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.
  • Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
  • Communicate with parents when necessary.
  • Assist in the orientation of new faculty members.
  • Provide in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  • Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling office.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
  • Interprets the guidance program to the community.
  • Collaborate with the school team on student summer programs.
  • Collaborate with the school leadership team regarding program development.
  • Perform academic and behavior checks for all assigned students.
  • Coordinate and gather information for Special Services (referrals, eligibility, interventions, IEP's, and auxiliary services.)
  • Network with other counselors.
  • Help coordinate crisis intervention procedures.
  • Coordinate individual and group guidance sessions.
  • Assists with special projects as directed by the principal.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the principal and/or district administrators.
