About The Position

The Electrophysiology Tech operates all monitoring, recording, and related equipment used during procedures. This role involves collecting and preparing pertinent data for physician and staff use, supporting physicians and staff during procedures, and monitoring patient electrocardiograms for cardiac dysrhythmias. The technician is responsible for operating the defibrillator and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation when required, providing assistance in emergency situations, and assisting in pre and post-procedure activities related to equipment and patient care. Additionally, the role involves positioning patients and selecting exposure factors for all radiographic procedures, identifying cardiovascular and peripheral vascular anatomy, and performing initial troubleshooting on equipment, arranging maintenance as necessary. Calibration, cleaning, and quality assurance measures on equipment are also key responsibilities. The technician prepares, delivers, and picks up reusable items for re-sterilization, and prepares and operates imaging, angiographic, interventional, and storage systems. A significant part of the role includes scrubbing to assist physicians with diagnostic, interventional, and surgical procedures, demonstrating knowledge of equipment and options. The position requires the ability to work with medical staff and fellows, serving as a technical resource, role model, and/or preceptor for students and staff. Developing, training, and administering competencies to staff, and facilitating clinical problem-solving and collaboration with other departments for patient care education are also expected. The role requires demonstrating knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development, and assessing data to meet age-specific needs.

Requirements

  • Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist registration (RCIS) issued by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), or Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS) certification issued by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE), or Electrophysiology Specialist (CEPS) certification issued by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE), or Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) certification issued by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
  • Associate's Degree in Cardiovascular Technology or related field.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in a cardiac catheterization lab performing cardiac monitoring, panning and scrubbing.
  • Completion of an approved basic ECG interpretation course within three months of hire.
  • Advanced technical skills in monitoring, scrubbing and panning with proficiency in both Catheterization and Electrophysiology procedures (where required).
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly change priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively with physicians, patients and other staff members.
  • Basic computer skills.

  • Cath or EP experienced preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a technical resource, role model and/or preceptor for students and staff.
  • Develops, trains and administers competencies to staff.
  • Facilitates clinical problem solving and collaborates with other departments to provide education on managing patients after procedures and any other cardiology department processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
