Electronics Exploitation SME

R3 Strategic Support Grp•Indian Head, MD
•$0 - $130,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Electronics Exploitation SME supports the Expeditionary Exploitation Unit ONE (EXU-1) Electronic Exploitation Division (N2E) and Readiness and Training Department (N7). The role performs electronics exploitation, critical technical forensic engineering, reverse engineering, and threat analysis on recovered electronic hardware, complex weapon systems, RF communication modules, and digital storage media. The position works in specialized laboratory and deployable environments worldwide and bridges hardware engineering and technical intelligence. It also supports development and delivery of high-fidelity training aids based on current adversary weapons systems to help EXU-1 units meet Optimized Fleet Response Plan platoon-certification requirements. The SME conducts component-level diagnostics, signal extraction and decoding, data recovery, system characterization, PCB teardown and reconstruction, hardware-interface analysis, micro-soldering and board repair, RF characterization, and forensic analysis. The role produces technical schematics, exploitation reports, intelligence briefings, and actionable findings for military commanders, intelligence analysts, and civilian leadership. The position requires approximately 25% travel, a DoD TOP SECRET clearance with SCI eligibility, and the ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • At least five years of related work experience.
  • Bachelor’s or associate degree desired; equivalent work experience performing the job duties may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screens and a background investigation.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • DoD TOP SECRET clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Expert-level proficiency in leaded and lead-free micro-soldering, board rework, and repair under stereomicroscopes.
  • Hands-on experience with fine-pitch SMT, BGA, and through-hole configurations down to 0201 packages.
  • Approximately 25% travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Cellebrite UFED, XRY, FTK, and EnCase forensic suites.
  • Bachelor’s or associate degree.
  • Experience with EDA and schematic-capture tools such as Altium Designer, KiCad, Eagle, or OrCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Support N7 in developing and providing high-fidelity training aids based on current adversary weapons systems for EXU-1 units of action and platoon certification requirements.
  • Perform component-level diagnostics, extract and decode complex signals, recover data from compromised memory systems, and prepare technical schematics and intelligence briefings.
  • Translate complex electrical and RF findings into actionable intelligence; author exploitation reports and brief military commanders, intelligence analysts, and civilian agency leadership.
  • Analyze, dismantle, and characterize recovered electronic subsystems from conventional weapons, improvised threat devices, and autonomous or unmanned systems; identify capabilities, vulnerabilities, and design lineage.
  • Perform logical and physical forensic extractions from damaged or locked storage devices, cellular phones, microcontrollers, and non-volatile memory chips; retrieve, reconstruct, and analyze data.
  • Capture, isolate, demodulate, and decode analog and digital signals using specialized software and hardware tools.
  • Perform systematic, non-destructive and destructive teardowns of unknown multilayer printed circuit boards.
  • Identify electronic components and research datasheets and engineering registers to determine component origins, specifications, and potential uses.
  • Identify and access JTAG, SWD, UART, SPI, and I2C hardware debug interfaces to extract firmware or monitor system buses.
  • Perform micro-soldering, board rework, repair, trace repair, jumper-wire bypasses, and desoldering of non-volatile flash memory chips for off-board reading.
  • Reverse-engineer multilayer PCBs and reconstruct their electrical architecture.
  • Use EDA and schematic-capture software to create accurate, production-grade component-level schematics.
  • Characterize transmitter and receiver modules, including frequency ranges, bandwidth, modulation, duty cycles, and power outputs.
  • Evaluate antenna performance, impedance matching, transmission lines, RF interference, signal propagation, and wireless behavior.
  • Configure, calibrate, and operate oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, VNAs, signal generators, logic analyzers, variable DC power supplies, and digital multimeters.
  • Complete annual training required by the COR, client, and R3, including cybersecurity, insider threat, and counterintelligence awareness and security briefings.
  • Perform other duties assigned or specified in contract Performance Work Statement tasks as directed by the R3 Program Manager.
  • Perform duties effectively with minimal supervision.
