Electronics Engineer II (Advanced Electronics Systems and Technologies | 345C)

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
•$115,544 - $138,008•Onsite

About The Position

JPL is seeking an Electronics Engineer II to join the Advanced Electronics Systems and Technologies group and help advance space electronics. The role works across instrument, avionics, and power electronics disciplines to develop technologies and systems for robotic space exploration. As part of a multidisciplinary team that includes systems engineers, electronics designers, embedded developers, and ASIC designers, the engineer will develop electronics technologies for future missions. The position involves technical development of electronics from specification and architecture through simulation, PCB design, laboratory testing, and mission integration. The engineer will design analog, digital, and power electronics for space and terrestrial robotics; evaluate candidate technologies and parts for radiation effects; collaborate across JPL to integrate designs into robotic missions and instrument systems; and propose projects addressing challenging problems in space and on Earth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, robotics engineering, or a similar technical discipline and at least 3 years of related work experience in electronics development in a professional setting or academic research project; or a master’s degree in a similar discipline and 1 year of related work experience; or a Ph.D. in a similar discipline and 0 years of related work experience.
  • Deep expertise in power electronics, including topology selection and optimization, component selection, magnetics design, and controller implementation.
  • Hands-on experience prototyping power electronics hardware, including co-design with thermal, structural, and embedded control systems.
  • Proficiency in an electronics laboratory environment, including specification, modeling, simulation, and testing of electronic systems.
  • Creative ideas for future electronics and the ability to communicate deeply technical ideas to non-experts.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to lead new hardware projects from concept to realization.
  • Curiosity about new techniques and ability to work with experts across science and engineering disciplines to create new technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to propose electronics projects and win funding to execute them.
  • Deep understanding of power electronics, including modeling, analysis, and testing of component stress, worst-case performance, and radiation effects.
  • Expertise in wide-bandgap semiconductors, including design of GaN and SiC power converters.
  • Expertise in custom magnetics finite element analysis (FEA) design and realization of hardware prototypes.
  • Experience with hardware design tools for simulation, such as LTSpice or PLECS, and printed circuit board design, such as Altium or KiCad.
  • Experience with single-board computer design and software development.
  • Experience with hardware design tools for FPGA design and programming.
  • Familiarity or experience with AI or ML tools for design, modeling, analysis, or test automation.

Responsibilities

  • Own technical development of electronics, including specification, architecture, simulation, PCB design, laboratory testing, and mission infusion.
  • Design analog, digital, and power electronics circuits for space and terrestrial robotics.
  • Identify candidate technologies, design test fixtures, and support heavy ion testing to evaluate new parts for radiation effects.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to integrate designs into complex robotic missions and instrument systems.
  • Propose new projects to solve challenging problems in space and on Earth.
