About The Position

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a skilled and motivated person to fill our vacant Electronic Technical Specialist position. This is an entry to intermediate level electronics technical specialist position which involves performing networking and electronics installation and maintenance tasks. This position develops and implements routine maintenance of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) field equipment. Selected candidate will be a field technician, and is subject to 24 hour on-call services, exposure to all types of weather conditions, performing field duties along freeways and intersections, and supporting regularly-scheduled on-call responsibilities for traffic signals and ITS within UDOT Region Two (Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele Counties). Typical tasks may include installation, inspection, emergency maintenance and preventative maintenance on video cameras, variable message signs, radar detection equipment, ramp metering and wrong way detection systems among other ITS. Other equipment or systems you work with may include traffic signal equipment, freeway lighting systems, and electronic traffic management systems. This work frequently requires aerial work using bucket trucks. You may also conduct the following tasks: review construction plans for installation of electronic equipment, maintain inventories of equipment using in-house software, including TransSuite, AIMS and PEMS. You may also provide technical assistance to contractors and construction personnel during the construction of electronic equipment to ensure the quality of work meets applicable Federal and State laws, rules, regulations, agency rules, standards, specifications, and guidelines; including UDOT, IMSA, NEC, MUTCD, OSHA, UOSH standards and specifications.

Requirements

  • Has at least two years of professional electrical/electronics work experience or electronics education (or a combination of both).
  • Has International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I and II certifications or a Journeyman Electrician License.
  • Has a valid driver's license.
  • Has a working knowledge that includes a combination of the following: electronics and electrical systems, traffic signal technology, and traffic signal construction.
  • Is very comfortable and proficient using computers and computer systems.
  • Will work on-call and after hours on a regular basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently live in or who are willing to relocate to the Salt Lake metro area.
  • Have a Journeyman Electrician license.
  • Have an Associate's degree or higher in electronics or electrical technology.
  • Have four or more years of combined education and professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, fabricate, and/or build equipment, troubleshoot and maintain Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and potentially Traffic Signal systems and Freeway Lighting systems
  • Interpret and execute miscellaneous tasks and articles from verbal/written instructions, blueprints and/or working drawings
  • Inspect facilities, equipment, systems, etc., to verify safety, maintenance, conditions, functions, and quality
  • Install parts, equipment, power, hardware or software, etc.
  • Act as a resource for management and staff; provide technical support within area of responsibility
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems, make adjustments, repair and/or perform preventative maintenance on computers, equipment, or machinery, etc.
  • Receive, research, and respond to incoming questions or complaints; provide information, explain policy and procedures, and/or facilitate a resolution
  • Coordinate and/or act as a liaison between agency or work unit and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs
  • Operate standard and Class A vehicles (requiring a Class A CDL license - may be obtained within 6 months of hire)
  • Other duties as assigned.
