About The Position

This role ensures VDOT Traffic Management Center ITS equipment is properly maintained by in-house and maintenance contractors, ensuring compliance with all established safety standards, VDOT policies and procedures, and ITS equipment operational standards. The position involves diagnosing, repairing, fabricating, installing, and performing maintenance and preventive maintenance on a variety of specialized electronic, electrical, and traffic control equipment within the traffic management systems (TMS) for assigned areas. It also includes performing emergency repairs 24/7 to ensure the safety of both internal and external customers, and using available resources to resolve assigned work details within pre-determined timeframes.

  • Considerable knowledge and experience in the electronics field including troubleshooting, circuit analysis, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiber optics equipment and IP networks.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards related to traffic signals, pedestrian signals, electronic and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic applications.
  • Knowledge of installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal and detection equipment, CCTV (Closed Circuit Television), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), microprocessors, servers, video cameras, imaging equipment, and intercom systems.
  • Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to problem solve, and manage time efficiently.
  • Skill in equipment repair, fabrication, and operation of electronic test equipment.
  • Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of electronic and ITS maintenance equipment and operations and how electronic and ITS equipment supports traffic management systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing.

  • Ability to oversee the work of others, as well as plan, coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities.

  • Experience in traffic signal maintenance and operations to include working with a variety of traffic control devices.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic management systems, including timing plans, graphic design, and computer use.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level I.
  • Skill in entering work orders in IMMS.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and inspect contractor work, performing visual and electronic testing and final system evaluation after maintenance, upgrades, or repairs.
  • Prepare routine and technical reports, logs, and documentation.
  • Instruct and train staff on the proper use and operation of technical equipment and safety.
  • Report deficiencies noted to supervisor.
  • Respond during off-duty hours for emergencies, equipment failures, backup support, and inclement weather.
  • Assist Contract Administrator in tracking inspection and contractor work records.
  • Provide reports to supervisor detailing accomplishments and required activities.
  • Prepare weekly and/or daily reports for submittal.
  • Monitor maintenance activities in assigned area.
  • Perform responsive maintenance including testing and troubleshooting at system, unit, board, and component levels.
  • Perform routine operations or equipment verifications.
  • Perform first response work related to testing and diagnostics, providing same-day repair when parts are available.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs during scheduled assignment.
  • Maintain spare units and replacement parts to ensure timely repairs.
  • Return defective or non-working equipment to the shop within 24 hours, create a repair ticket, and attach it to the unit for identification.
  • Use PDA/Bar code scanner system to track equipment through the inventory system.
  • Assist shop staff in bench repairs and gathering information needed to purchase parts or spare equipment.
  • Maintain assigned equipment such as vehicles, tools, and test equipment, ensuring no loss or damage due to negligence or misuse.
  • Perform time and data entry into financial tracking system and maintenance database.
  • Maintain documentation for equipment testing, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Provide checklists or reports as required.
  • Perform work order requests based on priority statuses.
  • Develop and update instruction manuals and provide staff training as needed.
  • Develop schedules and perform system software database backups of all facility systems.
