The primary purpose of this position is to install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate moderately complex electronically controlled equipment. The mechanic plans and lays out work using electrical and electronic block diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical orders; tests, tunes, aligns, and calibrates electronic control systems and components; and installs, overhauls, repairs, fabricates, or modifies industrial equipment and its subassemblies. The role also includes preventive maintenance and safe, secure work practices. Work is usually performed indoors in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. When equipment is fixed in place, work may take place in warehouse or industrial areas exposed to loud noise, heat, cold, or fumes. The position involves moderate physical effort, including handling items weighing up to 40 pounds frequently and heavier items occasionally, as well as extended sitting and frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. Occasional climbing or work at heights may be required. Potential hazards include electric shock, cuts, bruises, and burns from electrical energy or soldering irons. The employee must be a U.S. citizen, obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, hold a valid driver's license, and complete a pre-employment physical. The position may require shift work, work outside normal duty hours, emergency overtime, travel, and training or guiding lower-grade employees. A one-year probationary period or two-year trial period may apply, depending on the position type.
