About The Position

The Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic serves at the Orlando VA’s Central Energy Plant (CEP), performing advanced repairs, installations, troubleshooting, calibration, configuration, and functional testing of high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, cooling towers, emergency power generators, and the electronic and industrial controls that manage steam, utility power, and chilled-water systems. The mechanic monitors plant performance through building automation systems, local panels, and field rounds, and may independently modify control sequences or parameters and start or stop equipment to maintain stable operations. The position also performs corrective and preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and component-level troubleshooting across CEP mechanical systems, including boilers and associated water systems, chillers, pumps, air-handling equipment, fuel distribution systems, and domestic water and chemical-feed systems. Duties include annual boiler inspections and associated shutdown, cleaning, repair, and restoration work; fuel-system maintenance; chemical testing and treatment; generator inspections and battery checks; and documentation of work, operating conditions, and corrective actions. Work schedules may include Sunday through Saturday shifts or weekday four-day schedules; the exact tour of duty is discussed during the interview and may be adjusted to facility needs. Work involves prolonged standing and walking, bending, climbing, handling tools and test equipment, and working in mechanical rooms, plant spaces, and confined spaces. The position may require lifting items typically up to 40 pounds, with heavier items handled with assistance or mechanical aids. No formal education qualification is required, and no specific length of training or experience is prescribed; applicants must demonstrate sufficient relevant training or experience to perform the work.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the work; no specific length of training or experience is required.
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools for electronics work.
  • Ingenuity, including the ability to suggest and apply new methods.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronics theory and electronic-equipment troubleshooting.
  • Ability to use electronic test equipment.
  • Provide detailed resume descriptions supporting relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Must undergo a background/security investigation and pre-employment physical.
  • Must participate in the VA seasonal influenza vaccination program.
  • Must serve a one-year probationary period or two-year trial period, as applicable.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of prolonged standing and walking, bending, climbing ladders or stairs, handling tools and test equipment, and working in mechanical and plant spaces; may need to lift items typically up to 40 pounds and work in confined spaces or awkward positions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, programming, tuning, repair, installation, calibration, configuration, and functional testing of BAS/Metasys, PLC control panels, DOC systems, field controllers, HMI/graphics points, alarms, trends, communications links, and device addressing.
  • Verify control logic, operating sequences, setpoints, PID tuning, and alarm thresholds; restore controls functionality and validate operation using trend analysis, loop checks, interlock testing, and functional testing.
  • Monitor plant performance through BAS, local panels, and field rounds; identify abnormalities, take corrective action, and support safe, continuous steam, chilled-water, and power generation.
  • Modify control sequences and system parameters and start or stop plant equipment as needed to maintain stable operations.
  • Provide technical direction for fuel controls, boiler controls, chilled-water controls, and instrumentation.
  • Prepare operational documentation, system performance notes, alarm responses, and trend reviews; accurately document findings, repairs, control adjustments, and operational interventions in the work-order system.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and component-level troubleshooting on CEP mechanical systems, including boilers, tanks, feedwater systems, heat exchangers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air-handling units, exhaust fans, flow meters, VFDs, domestic water systems, and chemical-feed equipment.
  • Perform annual boiler inspections and repairs, including shutdown and lockout/tagout, system isolation, internal cleaning, tube punching, sight-glass and float cleaning, refractory repairs, gasket replacement, burner cleaning, auxiliary water-cutoff servicing, confined-space entry, and restoration for restart.
  • Repair valves, piping, actuators, pumps, mechanical seals, cooling-tower fans, motors, flow meters, sensors, pneumatic and electronic valves, and VFD boards or components.
  • Conduct chemical testing for sulfate, phosphate, and amines; adjust feed rates under VHA directives; and support steam-quality verification with SPS and the Water Safety Commission.
  • Maintain and repair water softeners, chemical-injection systems, and domestic-water distribution components.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot fuel-distribution systems serving boilers and generators, including actuators, float controls, sensors, pumps, motors, mechanical seals, pressure regulators, and underground storage tank monitoring systems.
  • Transfer fuel as needed to maintain underground tank capacity at the required 85% during deliveries and keep generator day tanks at mandated 80% levels.
  • Conduct twice-daily generator inspections and monthly generator battery checks, including electrolyte levels, resistance/capacity testing, charger operation verification, and documentation in accordance with NFPA 110/70B.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
