Electromagnetics Engineering Intern (Spring)

H3X TechnologiesLouisville, CO
$23 - $37

About The Position

Our team at H3X is hiring an intern to work alongside our design engineering team on real hardware programs. This is a hands-on role: you will contribute directly to electromagnetic design, analysis, and the tooling that supports our characterization and optimization workflows. You will see your work flow from simulation through to physical test data. We are looking for a full time Spring Intern, but also have availability for Summer 2027 and extended Co-Op positions.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Coursework or project experience in electric machines and electromagnetics
  • Experience with FEA for electromagnetic analysis (JMAG strongly preferred; Ansys Maxwell, MotorCAD, or similar is acceptable)
  • Working knowledge of electrical machine sizing fundamentals, magnetic and electric loading, winding design, and the relationships between geometry and performance
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis and automation
  • Exposure to multi-physics or design optimization methods (parametric sweeps, Pareto trade studies, coupled EM-thermal-structural analysis, multi-variable optimization algorithms)

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with permanent magnet synchronous machines and traction-class motor design
  • Hands-on lab or test experience (dynamometer testing, power measurement, instrumentation)
  • Understanding of power electronics and three-phase systems
  • Familiarity with CAD tools (Solidworks preferred)
  • Familiarity with drawing creation & tolerancing

Responsibilities

  • Build and run finite element models to predict motor performance, including torque, losses, efficiency mapping, and thermal behavior
  • Perform electrical machine sizing and preliminary design trades to evaluate topology and geometry candidates against performance and packaging targets
  • Develop and maintain Python-based analysis and post-processing tooling for simulation exports and bench test data
  • Support multi-physics optimization studies spanning electromagnetic, thermal, and structural domains
  • Correlate simulation results against dynamometer and instrumentation data, and help close the loop between model and measurement
  • Document methods and results clearly so that the team can build on your work

Benefits

  • Salary/Hourly Compensation Range: $23 - $37/hr based on school level & experience
  • Flexible hours (deliverable-based goals)
  • Relocation package
  • Monthly company events
  • Friday Team Lunches
