About The Position

The Electrolyzer Engineering Intern supports various technical groups (Engineering, Testing, and Operations & Maintenance) teams in the assembly, testing, and evaluation of electrolyzer cells, stacks, and supporting laboratory equipment. This role assists engineers and scientists with laboratory preparation, prototype assembly, experimental testing, data collection, and development. The intern will gain hands-on experience working with electrochemical systems, mechanical assemblies, and laboratory instrumentation while contributing to technology development, materials processing, and testing efforts. Expected Hours of Work: This is a seasonal position for 40 hours per week through summer 2026. Advanced Ionics office hours are 6:30am - 6:30pm. Your work schedule will generally be within normal business hours. Occasionally, there will be requests to work outside of normal business hours for special events. In those instances, a notice will be sent as early as possible. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on mechanical or laboratory aptitude with the ability to use basic tools and assembly equipment.
  • Active student pursuing Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical degree from an accredited college or university
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills
  • Ability to analyze and organize technical data for troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with engineers, scientists, and operations teams
  • Ability to reliably commute to the work location
  • Ability to lift, carry and move equipment up to 50 pounds, frequently
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop and reach for extended periods
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs as needed
  • Manual dexterity required for operating warehouse tools and equipment
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures (hot/cold) within the warehouse environment
  • Visual and auditory ability to safely operate equipment and identify hazards

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) preferred, ideally Autodesk Inventor or similar software.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with cleaning, organizing, and preparing parts and materials for laboratory testing and prototype assembly
  • Support electrolyzer cell and stack build and assembly, including preparing and cutting materials used in component builds
  • Perform dimensional inspections and measurements, including thickness and flatness measurements of materials and components
  • Collaborate with engineers to design, develop, build, and validate test stands used to evaluate electrolyzer performance and reliability
  • Support Engineering with design work and detail drawings for custom mechanical components and systems
  • Create assembly drawings, procedures, and work instructions to support the build of test equipment and prototypes
  • Safely learn to operate laboratory equipment and analytical instruments following established procedures
  • Assist with developing procedures and fixtures used for laboratory and electrolyzer testing.
  • Perform assigned laboratory and electrolyzer tests, including collecting and reporting results.
  • Analyze and organize test data from electrolyzer test stations and laboratory experiments.
  • Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and control system issues during equipment build and testing
  • Support Operations in equipment build, testing, and troubleshooting, documenting lessons learned and communicating improvements to Engineering
  • Assist with general laboratory operations, maintenance, and organization to support safe and efficient workflows
  • Perform other duties as assigned
