Electrochemical Engineer / Senior Electrochemical Engineer

Turnover Labs•Brooklyn, NY
•Onsite

About The Position

Turnover Labs is a Brooklyn-based, early-stage startup developing breakthrough electrochemical systems that help chemical manufacturers capture and reuse their emissions. Our technology converts industrial waste gases directly into valuable chemical products - reducing carbon impact while unlocking new sources of revenue for industrial facilities. We’re building practical, scalable hardware for a more sustainable industrial future, and are looking for engineers who want to apply their skills to meaningful, technically challenging work in the real world. About the Role We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Electrochemical Engineer to help design, assemble, and optimize our CO2 electrolysis cells. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrochemistry, recent hands-on experience with full cell assembly and diagnostics, and a passion for advancing sustainable technology from lab to commercial scale. Candidates will be expected to perform independent research testing new electrolyzer designs and components, troubleshoot problems, and improve system operation. Candidates will also be expected to diagnose system abnormalities and design and execute plans of action to achieve target performance metrics.

Requirements

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years (M.S.) or 1+ years (Ph.D.) of relevant hands-on experience, including direct, hands-on work with full cell assemblies, including electrolyzers, fuel cells, or other novel electrochemical systems.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in operating electrolyzer or fuel cell assemblies in a laboratory environment, including system operation, and diagnostics.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and diagnose operating issues within electrochemical technologies.
  • Experienced with implementing safety protocols and operating procedures for chemical handling and hazard management.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrochemical cell design and membrane–electrode assembly (MEA) fabrication, from materials selection to performance optimization.
  • Deep understanding of electrochemical principles and techniques, including cell performance evaluation and common degradation mechanisms.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and must maintain ongoing work authorization throughout employment.
  • Turnover Labs is not currently able to sponsor employment visas.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience with electrode and cell fabrication processes.
  • Python proficiency for experimental data analysis and visualization.
  • Prior experience in an industry or start-up environment, especially in clean tech or electrochemical systems.
  • Rapid prototyping experience, including familiarity with CAD software (preferably AutoDesk).
  • Experience with electrochemical simulation and modeling using software such as COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with characterization techniques including GC, SEM, TEM and XPS is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent research testing new electrolyzer designs and components
  • Troubleshoot problems and improve system operation
  • Diagnose system abnormalities and design and execute plans of action to achieve target performance metrics
  • Design, construct, and evaluate the performance of electrolyzer systems across different industrial use cases, configurations, and operating conditions

Benefits

  • Compensation range of $95,000 – 130,000 annual salary depending on experience, plus equity in a rapidly growing start-up.
  • Complete coverage of Dental, Health, and Vision Insurance.
  • Generous PTO policies.
  • 401(k)
  • Flexible and Accommodating Work Environment.
