About The Position

Santa Barbara Infrared, Inc. (SBIR) is hiring an Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) Systems Integration and Test Engineer for its Systems Engineering Group. The engineer will lead integration and characterization of SBIR’s Infrared Scene Projector (IRSP) product line and verify and validate product performance and compliance with customer needs. The role also contributes to product design and analysis. SBIR designs and manufactures EO and IR test instrumentation for military, commercial, and research sensor systems used in laboratory, production, depot, and field applications. Its products combine technologies such as MEMS, optical imaging systems, focal planes, and lasers with mechanical, thermal, electrical, and software subsystems. The engineer will help develop integrated hardware and software solutions for the EO/IR community. The position involves developing system specifications and test procedures, gathering and analyzing radiometric and electrical data, troubleshooting and calibrating systems, collaborating across engineering disciplines, and working directly with customers. Travel to customer facilities in the United States and internationally is required for on-site installation, integration, training, and acceptance testing. The advertised salary range is $125,000–$155,000 per year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, physics, or a similar field.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in electro-optics, infrared systems, or a related field; an advanced degree may count toward the experience requirement.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience testing optical systems and using optical test equipment and components for passive and/or active optical systems.
  • Experience with optical and electrical measurement instrumentation such as interferometers, infrared cameras, microscopes, multimeters, and/or oscilloscopes.
  • Systems engineering experience on EO/IR hardware development efforts in one or more areas: requirements establishment, maintenance and flowdown; trade studies; failure-mode, root-cause and corrective-action analysis; product lifecycle support; test-plan and procedure development; system test execution; or test-data analysis.
  • Solid foundation in optics, sensors, and EO/IR sensing systems.
  • Hardware troubleshooting capability and analytical skills.
  • Experience with physical modeling, simulation, and analysis applied to electrical, optical, and/or mechanical systems, by hand and in a programming or scripting environment.
  • Ability to work with colleagues and a supervisor to set priorities and organize incoming projects.
  • Ability to communicate system requirements, testing needs, debugging information, and design concepts across engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to communicate with vendors and customer teams and demonstrate system performance by leading or supporting factory and site acceptance testing.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and high proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel to customer facilities 5–15%.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or person granted asylum, with proper documentation, to comply with U.S. export-control regulations.
  • Must pass background, reference, and ITAR/EAR checks and a pre-employment drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing radiometric measurements.
  • Experience with vacuum systems.
  • Proficiency with image-processing and/or image-analysis software.
  • Experience properly handling ESD-sensitive parts, including PCB cards.
  • Working knowledge of MEMS and/or photolithography fabrication processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute plans and procedures for integration, characterization, and testing of complex electro-optical test products, particularly infrared scene projector systems.
  • Develop system specifications, verification methods, and test procedures for infrared scene projector systems.
  • Collect and analyze radiometric and electrical test data; troubleshoot and calibrate IRSP systems to optimize performance.
  • Collaborate with customers, mechanical and electrical engineers, and systems engineering colleagues to ensure designs meet system-level requirements.
  • Interact with customers during factory acceptance testing and design reviews.
  • Travel to customer facilities in the United States and internationally to lead on-site system installation, integration, and training.
  • Work with Engineering to document and implement hardware changes and deviations from standard procedures as needed.
  • Perform concept design, analysis, and specification development for business development and potential new customer applications.
