About The Position

Responsible for providing skilled journey-level installation, repair, electrical and electronic equipment and facilities systems on a variety of County buildings and facilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED, successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the electrical trade, AND one (1) year of journey-level electrician/HVAC experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods and materials used in the installation, repair and maintenance of a variety of electrical/HVAC systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods and materials used in electronic information and control system installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment common to the field.
  • Knowledge of computer applications related to the work.
  • Knowledge of job estimation principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various ethnic and social backgrounds.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining specialized tools and test and safety equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Skill in designing, laying out and preparing sketches for electrical, electronic and related installation and maintenance jobs.
  • Skill in estimating necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Skill in safely operating and maintaining a variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.
  • Skill in using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Skill in preparing records and reports of work performed.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting manuals, specifications and drawings.
  • Skill in understanding and following written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in working successfully with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Skill in contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Driver’s license.
  • Obtain OSHA certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the design, layout and installation of office, public facility, shop, and other remodeling, repair or modification projects affecting County buildings and facilities; takes measurements; prepares working drawings and sketches; assists in preparing project specifications.
  • Estimates materials, parts, tools and equipment needed for work assignments; orders and picks up materials and supplies from outside vendors as appropriate; prepares cost estimates for job.
  • Performs skilled electrical work such as the installation of wire, conduit, outlets, fixtures, switches, appliances, timers, alarm systems, lighting systems, appliances and other elements of office and public facilities.
  • Performs skilled electrical work such as the installation of motors, pumps, control systems, auxiliary power systems, and similar major installations in plant and public facilities; may work from aerial lift equipment.
  • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on systems and equipment; tests emergency power, lighting, alarm and other backup systems to ensure ongoing usage.
  • Tests and troubleshoots electrical and electronic components, repairs or orders and replaces components, rewires systems, and tests equipment prior to placing back into service.
  • Reads diagrams, blueprints, specifications and manuals for installation and repair projects.
  • Maintains and services electrical test and repair equipment and hand and power tools; keeps small inventory of frequently used supplies and parts.
  • Ensures that proper safety precautions are followed, particularly around energized circuits.
  • Drives County vehicles to work sites and transports materials and assistants as required.
  • Completes and maintains reports of work performed; completes forms and maintains accurate maintenance records.
  • Ability to offer suggestions and directions or participation as an active member of a work team.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
